In a 4-3 vote, commissioners in Hillsborough County, Florida voted to keep 2 statues of Confederate soldiers and a large monument. This display, located outside of the Hillsborough County courthouse, has been standing since 1911.

They will stand for years more now, on that public land. Hearings were previously held in Tampa, with speakers from both sides of the issue having their say. In the end, most commissioners felt that the statues were more honoring the soldiers, than the Confederacy, or any political policy.

They thought it was too disrespectful to those dead soldiers who gave up their lives in battle, to dishonor them, by removing their statues. They were right.

At least they're doing it right somewhere!

At least they're doing it right somewhere!
They WERE.

Beyond belief, these loons took another vote (no reason given), and voted 4-3 TO REMOVE the monument. One of the commissioners who previously voted to keep it, wasn't present.

Wow. This is like >> I don't like how the Super Bowl turned out. I demand a do-over. They claim they have a rule that votes can be nullified and a new vote taken. OK - but shouldn't there have to be a REASON given ? Like somebody was found to have been drunk, or bribed, or something ? But just to do a another vote because you didn't like how the last one went, is nuts. And these as re supposed to be intelligent adults. Sheesh!

The yes voters on the monument issue made a terrible mistake. They didn’t reject slavery or Confederate secession, they despicably dishonored SOLDIERS, past & present, in America, and all over the world, including veterans like myself.

Slavery and secession are policies, and they are made by POLITICIANS, not soldiers. But the statues are not politicians. They are SOLDIERS, whom you would keep your hands off if you had an ounce of decency and integrity, instead of caving in to the opportunist Les Miller and his loudmouth mobs.

Having done research on the Civil War, I found that very few of “Confederate” SOLDIERS, wearing the uniform or not, were fighting for slavery or the Confederacy. Most never even heard of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis, or slavery. Many in mountain states never saw a black person in their entire lives.

All they knew was people from hundreds of miles away were shooting at them, blowing up their buildings and bridges, and burning down their churches. What would YOU DO ? Nothing ?

They fought to defend the state of Florida, their county, their town, and their homes and farms. They were DEFENDERS - unlike the Vietnam War SOLDIERS who were attackers, and who attacked people who were not attacking us.

The Southern SOLDIERS fought a DEFENSIVE war, in contrast to the offensive war of the Vietnam SOLDIERS, who fought offensively with less validity than the Florida defenders. Do you want to remove the statues & monuments of the Vietnam SOLDIERS too ?

You may be biting of more than you care to chew. Veterans groups are just getting geared up to oppose you, and to ignore that could be a major political sinkhole for you, Mr & Ms Commissioners.

Much more honorable to defend your lands from an invasion, than invading your neighbor because of some Tyrants wishes.

Exactly. Which makes the defense of Florida and other Southern states more honorable than the traveling of thousands of miles to attack Vietnamese who never attacked us (or even threatened to).

So how about it Commissioners: you want to renove the Vietnam SOLDIERS' statues & monuments too ? We wouldn't want to have to call you guys hypocrites.

That's a shame. Hopefully better luck with the next vote.

Now the county needs a proposition to keep the statues forever independent of the bought-off politicians. Otherwise, it's just a matter of time before they come down, anyways.

If there IS a "next vote" Of course, for those who feel strongly enough about it, it might be possible to replace the statues, with live men wearing Confederate uniforms, carrying facsimilie rifles, and standing where the monument was.

History is a vital part of learning. Statues in remembrance of historical characters is vital to this end. It does not matter if they are great statesmen or crooks, their is value to the statue in the conversations generated.

A fair perspective, and shared by many.

One day they will call for the removal of all the statues of the 18 slave owning Presidents...

And of course there was slavery under the USA flag for 89 years. They will call for the removal of our flag. They already called for the removal of the Confederate Battle Flag, and they only had slavery for 4 years.

Question is what next ? Will the defenders of what is right and just, take on the political panderers of the Hillsborough County commission, and make the monument stay, or will they roll over and play dead ?

I'd be interested to see what the reaction to THIS would be. Any guesses ?
