I think everyone can agree the department of education is very bad at what it does. We can also probably agree that throwing cash at kids with no results has proven to be a bad idea. Teachers are not respected by a large portion of the public, and are viewed as babysitters. Athletic facilities are always top notch and a high priority. This one hurts because I love sports, and I enjoyed playing them. Every five years, a brilliant bureaucrat will try to completely change things. Many teachers and departments face an annual battle to save their departments. They are constantly threatened to be fired. I'm not sure how the property tax mess funds public schools, but I've heard enough that it means poor districts can't even have toilet paper in their bathrooms. No TP really, really annoys me. We also have teachers forced to teach kids how to take a test that in no way affects their future. I believe teacher's hands are tied in many ways about what and how they teach their subject. To add insult to injury, kids are not even given basic knowledge of our own constitution. I'll admit I'm not smart enough to know what to do with this stinking pile of crap, I'm sure there is someone with an idea that is light years better than what we have, and I'd love to hear it. I'm not hopeful however, because it seems like society looks down on teachers.

Who do you personally know, or have ever met, who looks down on teachers?

My own grandmother looked down on my father. I don't know if teaching wasn't a man's profession or what. He was even an ex military officer who served in Viet Nam. She didn't think much of teachers having summers off. I also heard people talking about 'fixing' education while waiting to get my car fixed. They thought it was stupid to pay teachers. To be fair, many in rural communities do look down on teachers. I'm not sure why. They get hosed for taxes to pay for kids that are not theirs. It doesn't appear the left is all that concerned with education either, considering they don't even encourage their kids to learn or graduate.

That last shot was a bit harsh. I do get a little worked up by the whole stupid republicans don't care about education stuff. It is more than a bit hypocritical. Besides, all the liberal caring has caused the mess we currently have. There are not really points for good intentions. I don't care which side comes up with a better system. A good idea is a good idea. Unfortunately, I believe both sides tend to look down on teachers. They are just day care workers who don't have a 'real' job.

The Egoism of Negligent Adults

Treating students like impersonal objects results in failure and waste of all money that follows that attitude.

Children naturally form into teams that compete. In sports, winning is its own reward. But that activity fulfills a primitive desire, so a greater incentive is needed, and I don't mean an insulting trinket like a star on a paper or high grades.

Divide the class into teams with a parity of IQs. Quiz frequently. The highest-scoring team will get Friday off from school, the lowest will have to come in on Saturday. Individual high-scorers from four grades older will get paid to teach the Saturday classes. One of the most pathetic lines in the movie 21 was that casino gambling was the first time the genius student ever made any money from being smart.

It sounds like a clear cut case of you projecting your beliefs on others.

Reported. You keep spamming this post and we are tired of it!

The truth is a bitter pill to swallow: it starts at home. If a child grows up in a household where education isn't a priority or that teachers aren't to be respected, there's little a teacher can achieve with them.
