Education vs Indoctrination: FDR's Depression

I used to think that you may have some basis for your belief in your own intelligence. I've revised that opinion downward.

Mccarthy was a self-centered fool who was correct in exposing the communist problem of that time, but a moron in how he went about exposing it. Needless to say, he harmed many innocent people. He deserves the poor reputation he enjoys to this day.

That does not negate that he has been proven right. As for FDR and putting people to work...

You may as well give credit to putting people to work in America to Adolph Hitler. It would be much more accurate. Nothing FDR did would have solved the economic problem this country faced in those days.

Unfortunately, for you and others (but fortunately for the world), Obama does not have a Hitler this time around to help put America back to work.

Name one "innocent person" harmed by McCarthy

The Hollywood Ten. There are ten men who were unjustly blacklisted from working in Hollywood, forced to live in Mexico while they write, and all thanks to McCarthyism. There are ten people you can start with.

Again, Joe McCarthy, not McCarthyism.

We're talking about the Senator

If you sat down and thought about it, you could list 10 men who are unjustly blacklisted from Hollywood right now, for nothing more than just espousing conservative values.

Will you show outrage for them?

Before a I answer let me be clear. You're a partisan hack, not very bright and parrot the talking points of the right wing (Fascists in many respects). You lack any of the qualities of "Americana", are a callous conservatives who doesn't give a moments concern for anyone but himself. It's why I belittle you constantly, why I call Warrior an asshole at every opportunity, why I laugh at the stupidity or Willow Tree and Stephanie and become nauseas whenever I read PC's defense of conservatism.

1. FDR put people to work. The world economy was in chaos, Fascism was the growing ideology in parts of Europe and Asia as well as Communism. The threat of revolution here was real as the discrepancy between the 1% and the rest of of our people had never been greater (until possible now). Hoover sent troops to disperse the veterans of the first World War, read about the bonus army.

See: List of strikes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

FDR was calm, focused and assured the American People that fear was the only thing to fear. You and your kind use fear as a tool to gain power (Hello Reichstag fire) and hate (Hello Kristalinacht).

Open you eyes, try (in your case it will be hard work) to think about the consequence of what you believe you want.

2. McCarthy was a drunk demagogue who ruined peoples lives. An asshole, much like today's callous conservatives.

Obama's plan is to put people to work. You're to damn dumb to understand that is the ultimate solution to our economic mess. Putting more money into the hands of the few only increases the likelihood we will become a pure plutocracy, the fascism of the 21st Century.

Of the 159 people on McCarthy's list, nine were engaged in espionage.

Oh, I see. Yes. So Joe McCarthy had nothing to do with McCarthyism.

Riiiiggghhhtttt. Okay.

Are you trying to be clever and intimate that McCarthy had nothing to do with creating the mass hysteria over Communism that directly resulted in the Hollywood Blacklist? Is that really what you're saying?

Holy fuck. You're dumb even for a Birther.

What did Joe McCarthy have to do with Hollywood?

On October 20th, 1947 the Los Angeles Times reported that the House Committee on Un-American Activities would start hearings to determine the degree of communist penetration into the film industry and its output.

HUAC (House Un-American Activities Committee) — History.com Articles, Video, Pictures and Facts

Targeting Hollywood and Alger Hiss
The HUAC investigations delved into many areas of American life, but they paid special attention to the motion picture industry, which was believed to harbor a large number of Communists. Not wishing to get on the wrong side of Congress or the movie-going public, most film industry executives did not speak out against the investigations. In addition, many of the major studios imposed a strict blacklist policy against actors, directors, writers and other personnel implicated in Communist activity.

The film industry investigations reached their peak with the events surrounding the Hollywood Ten, a group of writers and directors who were called to testify in October 1947. The all-male group of screenwriters, producers and directors (Alvah Bessie, Herbert Biberman, Lester Cole, Edward Dmytryk, Ring Lardner Jr., John Howard Larson, Albert Maltz, Samuel Ornitz, Adrian Scott and Dalton Trumbo) refused to cooperate with the investigation and used their HUAC appearances to denounce the committee's tactics. All were cited for contempt of Congress and sentenced to prison terms, in addition to being blacklisted from working in Hollywood.

HUAC also sounded an alarm about Communists infiltrating the federal government. The most infamous case began in August 1948, when a self-confessed former member of the American Communist Party named Whittaker Chambers (1901-61) appeared before the committee. During his dramatic testimony, Chambers accused Alger Hiss (1904-96), a former high-ranking State Department official, of serving as a spy for the Soviet Union. Based on allegations and evidence provided by Chambers, Hiss was found guilty of perjury and served 44 months in prison. He spent the rest of his life proclaiming his innocence and decrying his wrongful prosecution.

Hiss' conviction bolstered claims that HUAC was performing a valuable service to the nation by uncovering Communist espionage. The suggestion that Communist agents had infiltrated senior levels of the U.S. government also added to the widespread fear that "Reds" (a term derived from the red Soviet flag) posed a serious threat to the nation. HUAC's work served as a blueprint for the tactics employed by U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy in the early 1950s. McCarthy led an aggressive anticommunist campaign of his own that made him a powerful and feared figure in American politics. His reign of terror came to an end in 1954, when the news media revealed his unethical tactics and he was censured by his colleagues in Congress.

By the late 1950s and early 1960s, HUAC's relevance was in decline, and in 1969, it was renamed the Committee on Internal Security. Although it ceased issuing subpoenas that year, its operations continued until 1975.

Do you know the difference between the US House of Representatives and the Senate?

Joe McCarthy was a US Senator, how could he have anything to do with the a House Committee?

Do you see how your indoctrinated hive mind betrays you?

wow, really?

I said if you think about it, you.......AS IN YOU....could probably come up with 10 names....Maybe I gave you to much credit.

But just off the top of My head.....

Tom Seleck

When was the last time you saw him in anything big?

How about James Woods?

Before he came out against Islamic Extremism, he had major roles in Hollywood with people with huge star power, Silvester Stallone just to name one.

There are others....In fact, there was a book where hollywood execs as much as admitted to it.

How about a few more you don't hear about anymore?

Robert Davi -- Singer/Actor.
Gary Sinise -- Actor A hollywood star, nor reduced to a series on TNT.
Adam Baldwin
Kirk Cameron

I'm sure a google search can turn up even more....

The question is, however

Will these people get the same outrage?

Probably not.

Does that mean the House cannot conduct investigations, even when a Senator is involved? Such nonsense!
FDR began the healing process with his inaugural address, perhaps before, maybe just the e election began the healing? There was no manual on how to cure depressions, and there is still none today, but the Republicans may surely have a manual on how to cause depressions. The entire New Deal was an experiment, people stopped starving and if people could work they were given jobs instead of charity. If you put your money in the bank it was there when you wanted to withdraw some of it. Hope was in the air and the fear was leaving the nation. Even Republicans were so scared they cooperated with FDR for a short time, and then finally reverted back to the usual party of no, no, no. FDR put Republicans in his cabinet including Morganthau. The nation was in a bad way but it was alive and capitalism was alive. Other nations were looking for new economic or political systems but the US had FDR and they believed, and they kept capitalism, the Constitution and our political system.
No wonder the people voted for FDR four times and historians rate him as America's greatest president.

You're a dope. So you're saying because the HuAC wasn't under McCarthy's control that they didn't go after Hollywood? Of course they did, and McCarthyism is the key point here, not McCarthy himself, at least for me. Dipshit.

wow, really?

I said if you think about it, you.......AS IN YOU....could probably come up with 10 names....Maybe I gave you to much credit.

Why would I spend time trying to think of people on some supposed "conservatives blacklist" when I don't believe it exists? That's dumb. It's up to YOU, the person who posited this whopper of a doozy to tell me who YOU think is on that list, to prove its existence. Let's begin.

Tom Seleck

He's getting older. Now it may be hard to believe, but as stars get older, they're less desirable for roles, unless the roles are for older people. Seleck was getting work into the mid 90's on "Friends" and in "In & Out," well after he made his political leanings clear. In fact, wasn't he out as a Republican at the HEIGHT of his stardom, the 80's?

Debunked. Next?

How about James Woods?

Again, aging character actor. As he gets older, parts become more scarce. He's worked plenty in the last five years tough.

14 projects since 2007.

Debunked. Next?

Indoctrinated hive mind responds with platitudes.

In this thread alone we've mentioned how the 1920/1 Depression was handled, how do you say "there was no manual"? Do you think that was the first Recession/Depression Ever?

Also, no matter how many times you say it, Senator McCarthy had NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING to do with the HUAC which was years before him

How about a few more you don't hear about anymore?

Okay sure! This should be fun.

Robert Davi -- Singer/Actor.

No idea who the fuck this guy is...let me go imDB him.

Oh, THAT guy. Okay, yeah. He's not really a big star, but you probably knew that. That being said, I counted 20 projects since 2007. What a weird Black List that keeps people actually IN work.

Gary Sinise -- Actor A hollywood star, nor reduced to a series on TNT.

Hahahaha. What the fuck? Seriously? He's not been relegated to B-status. He was always an amazing actor, has had plenty of work and up until very recently he was on a network TV show. Holy fuck dude, this is like fish in a fucking barrel.

Adam Baldwin

I really didn't have any fucking clue who this guy is. He hasn't been working as much, but he's certainly done some things. But really, why would THAT guy get blaclklisted? Even when he was famous he wasn't famous.
