Don't Buy This Crazy Product

If the gps is mounted correctly, it takes only a fraction of a second (a blink of the eye) to look at it to verify that you are on course. Also, the unit will give verbal instructions when near a turn off. It's similar to glancing at the speedometer to verify the speed of the car and the distance traveled on the trip.

I also from time to time change there radio station on my radio. I don't usually pull over to do that.
Yes, speedometer takes a second. Looking at gps can sometimes take only a fraction of a second. Other times, the look may be more complicated. At first, you think it will just be a second, then it's another second (you think that will be it), turns out to be more complicated than you first thought. 2 more seconds......BANG!

I still say no screens in driver area. Should be illegal.
When it takes longer, that's when I pull over. That being said, safe use of such devices takes discipline. Many drivers don't have that discipline.

Hey they just build that shit right into the dashboards now

no need to buy those cheapo gadgets

Yeah, you can drive all over, just to prove you are a manly man. I prefer going precisely where I need to go and getting there as quickly as possible.

BTW, having that map or mapbook out on the passenger seat is no distraction, I'm sure.
Not at all, if you're PARKED while looking at it. (or the cell phone) (or the touchscreen)

And when the GPS gives you a direction and you need to make sure you are doing the right maneuver? With the screen on the dash, you are able to look quicker than you can look at the speedometer or gas gauge.

If I can’t use one of those things, how am I supposed to watch porn when I’m driving? Those things are very “handy,” if you know what I mean.
This is a serious subject. Some people have died because of these screwball things. If you have to talk like a troll fool, go do it somewhere else OK ? Time to get back to the real heart of the subject here.

Sometimes. And of the other times, somebody could wind up dead.

We got along without these toys for decades, we can now too.

Correct. Which, unfortunately, is why it would be better to not allow their use at all. You never know when when of those no discipline drivers may cross your path.

We got along without cars for centuries too.

Yes i know protection dude.

But is it the 'end all' distraction ?

Consider all the mam pajamas with one hand (and usually eye) hanging over the back seat

the list of everyday distactives isn't confined to an Iphone

Nobody said they were.

I know the facts and figures for distracted driving. I have posted them. That is one of the reasons why I am looking forward to driverless cars.

But using a GPS is not the cause of significant accidents that I have seen. Texting is the worst. Phone calls are bad too, regardless of whether it is handsfree or not.

I don't understand why you're distinguishing between ways of looking at screens while driving. Even 3 seconds of eyes off the road, looking at anything, can become a disaster.

I am distinguishing because it matters. I have my GPS up on the top of my dash so I don't have to look down or to the side. I look for less than half a second. Far less time than it takes to check my mirrors, and I do that far more often.

Can't ascertain much in less than a half a second. Or anything at all.

I can determine whether it is the next turn or the one after. Just like I can determine whether the lane beside me is clear with a quick glance in a side mirror.

And the GPS does give directions audibly.

This picture, is it of someone who lost control of their vehicle because they looked at a GPS?
