We didn't need to know from the beginning, we needed to adjust our procedures when it was determined the mortality was mostly limited to the very old and/or those with co-morbidities.

Until you realize that more than half of all Americans have at least one co-morbidity.

Not the ones that were more likely to result in severe complications with COVID, and those same people have to worry about the flu every year as well.

That still left plenty of people who were better of risking exposure, then infection, then natural immunity.

Especially after the shots started coming out and even those with co-morbidities had their risks lessened.

COVID was going to and will be endemic in the world now, and the powers that be knew it, and didn't react properly to it once the initial fears of 3%-5% mortality across the board were found to be wrong.
