See here’s the thing, in order for taking the high road to work out your opponent has to actually have some morals and a conscience that would enable them to realize you took the high road and they were assholes and feel bad about it. The left has none of that. Their goal always was to be the unbearable asshole in every situation. So the only option was to return the favor. And here we are.
