Now, there was once a time when conservatives were fanatics, I must admit that. But things have changed.

The left are now the fanatics. You are characterized by:
-belief in your ideology despite facts or evidence
-refusal to recognize there is another side, and continually ridiculing them as irrelevant, and using all sorts of personal, peripheral attacks against them (such as racism, etc.) whether justified or not
-doubling down on everything that has failed rather than changing course
-belief that if only you were allowed to run things unimpeded, it would bring about utopia on earth

I would say that does characterize the American left these days.
