Some aren't (you would prolly fit the category), but most of us realise in order to get on in this world, there needs to be cooperation. Cooperation leads to towns having councils, countys having some form of govt, ditto states and countries. Us normal folk realised a long time ago, that for a civilised society to work you need to be a land of laws.

Not all all. You have missed the substance of the post (either it has passed you by, have diliberately ignored it, or you are cynically pushing it under the carpet). I am not putting a gun to anybody's head. I just realise that all decent societies need the rule of law. Now, what those laws are, and how they should be enacted - that's the crux. You seem to think that anything that doesn't encroach on anybody else should not be a law. I say BS. There are plenty of examples where that is patently untrue.

FEAR

Seriously. Think about it. If there was no FEAR of being robbed and/or assaulted there is no reason to carry a gun, right?

We buy auto insurance and wear seat belts because we FEAR that at some point in time we may be involved in an accident. (Ok, and in most cases the law requires it and we fear getting a ticket too.)

Hey!! I'm not knocking it. Illinois will soon finally join everyone else in passing a CC law. When we do that I will get one so I can carry it in any areas known for high crime rates. But since I don't FEAR being robbed and/or assaulted in my small hometown I don't feel the need to carry it around.

Now I also realize that there are those who simply want to carry one around like a playtoy. But I suspect that they are simply making up for other "shortcomings".

So if anyone disagrees that FEAR is the primary motivation to carry a gun please explain why it's not.

Good points, but how about someone who wants to be prepared to protect themselves if something happens but isn't sitting there trembling in fear day after day? I have a Belgian Malinois and an American Bulldog female, they are a good deterrent as am I. But I still don't want to bring the proverbial "knife into a gunfight". I grew up with firearms in my house and had fun going to the woods and the range with my Dad to fire them.

I guess you could technically label the motivation as fear but I'm not a fearful person. I just like that motto of "Be prepared!".
