Banana Republic

How gerrymandering and voter suppression paved the way for abortion bans

Alabama Republicans have pursued a similar gerrymandering strategy, segregating black voters to boost conservative white Republicans.
In his successful campaign for the US Senate in 2017, Democrat Doug Jones won 50 percent of the vote but carried just one of Alabama’s seven congressional districts—a sign of just how lopsided the state’s political map has become.
That same year, a federal court ruled that 12 of Alabama’s legislative districts were illegally racially gerrymandered. The Republican State Leadership Committee—which funded the GOP’s takeover of numerous state legislatures in 2010 and then coordinated the drawing of new, gerrymandered maps—spent $1.5 million to flip Alabama red for the first time since Reconstruction.

Many more examples are given. It is the death knell of democracy. If you feel that your vote doesnt count then you pretty much stop voting.

Do people get sent to jail for these crimes ?

Ah, Tommy? Alabama has voted Republican consistently since 1976 when it voted for Jimmy Carter...a good 'ole Southern boy! For you to claim that it took illegal gerrymandering to "flip" Alabama red is one of your dumber posts on this board!

Just a piece of advice? If you want to comment on our politics? Try knowing the basics before you claim to know what you're talking about!
I am not claiming it. It seems to be a fact.

It's not even CLOSE to being a fact, Tommy! When you claim something that's obviously not the case you're one of two things...incredibly ignorant...or deliberately lying! Which is it with you?

Ah, Oldstyle? This is about the Alabama State Legislature. It was solidly Democratic from 1875 to 2010.

Here's the thing, Sparky...in order to have the ability to "gerrymander" a State one first has to have control of the State legislature. My point is that Alabama is a conservative State. It always has been. So kindly explain how the GOP was able to win control of the State legislature by gerrymandering (which is what the OP's claim was!) when it was the Democrats who controlled the body that set districts?

Your claim was that Alabamans voted Republican since Carter. Concerning the State legislature, no, they did not. You didn't know that, and you were too lazy to look it up. That's why you fell on your red rubber nose, laughter all around.

Moreover, as to your claim "the GOP was able to win control of the State legislature by gerrymandering (which is what the OP's claim was!)", I would recommend remedial reading lessons, and reading as often as necessary to understand what the article actually claims:

The Republican State Leadership Committee—which funded the GOP’s takeover of numerous state legislatures in 2010 and then coordinated the drawing of new, gerrymandered maps—spent $1.5 million to flip Alabama red for the first time since Reconstruction.

Can't be more than a few hours before even your penny drops. Fingers crossed, and all, you'll get it done!

Because I read, they spent money to flip the legislature, AND THEN proceeded with gerrymandering. I am pretty sure you agree (take your time).

No, iceholes, it is Tommy's business because of Hillary's DNC link to MI6, which is automatically MI5, a more internally Brit agency.

It's the Democrats who demand the raced based congressional districts.
The Supreme Court has ruled against them several times.

BS. Gerrymandering has been around since the founding to the country. BOTH parties have done this over the years. The looney left was on the short end after 2010, so they whine like crybabies and would do the exact same thing if the numbers were reversed.

Ah, so you're going with the narrative that it was 1.5 million spent by the RSLC that "stole" the election away from Democrats...and that in the two election cycles since then they won because of gerrymandering? Is that really what happened...or is it simply that the Democratic Party has moved so far to the left in the last ten years that conservative Democrats like those that make up Alabama (as evidenced by their voting for Republicans for President for the past 30 plus years!) no longer feel like they have anything in common with the Democrats?

Up until recently, these alleged crimes were mandated by federal law. The democrats have very dirty hands when it comes to minority majority districts i.e. "segregating black voters" as it was the cornerstone of the Voting Rights Act that they designed, enacted, and vehemently defended that mandated southern states create minority majority districts in order to force the election of black representatives. The Supreme Court couched warnings that they were going to gut the law if it was not updated. The democrats refused to change it; the supreme court did their thing; and now suddenly the democrats that forced the creation of these districts because of racism are boohooing that the districts they created are racist. It is no wonder even within the DNC, support for their establishment policies and candidates is quickly waning.
So do you think that it is wrong ?

There are a lot of thats in my statement so I am not sure what you are asking about specifically. The democrats didn't mind the system they designed back when they had "blue dog" democrats i.e. conservative southerners in the party. They don't have many of those left.

As for gerrymandering, both parties do it. It is pretty much necessary in so much as the districts have to be drawn some where. Even the cases that reject districts reject them on the grounds they are not gerrymandered enough for the left. The only way to be neutral would be to look at population distribution only--no race, no gender, no political performance.

I am a neither so I don't have a dog in this fight. My complaint isn't gerrymandering. It is that there are not enough members of the House of Representatives so the districts are too large and the members represent very divergent interests. I would double the number of seats in the house at the very least, though it really should be tripled and change the way the legislature operates so that not all those members would have to live in DC area and voting was more a window to cast the vote instead of a high stakes immediate up or down vote. Say allow members to vote electronically and the vote to occur over a whole week.
The US is a banana republic, but not due to gerrymandering. It is due to the fact that the federal government refuses to abide by the rule of law...aka the Constitution. It is rule by the whims of the transnational capitalist class...aka the billionaires and millionaires.

Americans keep trying to fix things by electing men they HOPE will CHANGE things, evidence BO and Donnie, but obviously nothing changes.
Its the same everywhere.
Yeah pretty much.

Why? Because government is for sale to the highest bidder.

Hence....Government equals corruption and criminality.

No "Thank you!" was required for the reading lesson. And yet... Your reading comprehension disorder continues. No one claimed anyone "stole" the election in 2010. No one claimed subsequent elections were "won because of gerrymandering".

You know, "Sparky", you can create, and wrestle to the ground, your tiny straw men all on your own. You really should henceforth refrain from involving me in your masturbatory exercises. Thanks in advance.

Your country is run from Brussels. And they don’t bother gerrymandering...they just ignore votes.

Since when does anyone wrestle straw men to the ground? You think I need a reading lesson? I think you need a lesson on composition. Your analogy is nonsensical.

What exactly ARE you claiming if not that someone stole the election by spending money? What ARE you claiming if not that the two subsequent elections were won because of gerrymandering?

Its very amusing how those who blather on about gerrymandering seem to think only one side does it. News flash both parties do it as someone famously said elections have consquences.

It's not parties that are big on gerrymandering...it's individual politicians that are trying to manipulate districts so they have a demographic that makes it almost impossible for them to be kicked out of office. That's the goal...not to push Democratic or Republican policies...it's about staying in office.

Suppressing votes, gerrymandering, voter ‘ID’ laws – all illustrate the GOP’s contempt for the democratic process and their desire to maintain Republican minority rule.
