It is not futile on either side. Hamas and Iran want desperately to prevent normalized relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, and this war will likely prevent that from happening. So that's what Hamas gets out of this war.
For Israel, this war should finally make clear that the Oslo experiment has failed and there is no diplomatic solution to the Palestinian problems is possible and it makes no sense to talk about a Palestinian state for the foreseeable future. Israel's only consideration in dealing with the Palestinians should be the security of Israel, and in that context, it makes no sense at all to allow Hamas or Islamic Jihad or any other Palestinian terrorist group to exist in Gaza, and that means Israel must reoccupy Gaza and hunt down all the terrorists there. The first step in achieving peace in the ME is to throw out the Oslo Accords.
