Another Omnibus Spending Bill

This past Thursday the U.S. Senate passed a $1.1 trillion dollar omnibus spending bill. This bill includes $477 billon for operating budgets for several cabinet departments and other agencies, taken from the (record setting) $3.36 trillion dollar budget Obama passed early this year. For those of you that were yelling about Bush and his spending, why aren’t you yelling now? Obama’s federal budget is two times more then what Bush had. He’s spending at a rate 3x faster then Bush.

As Obama has reminded us a few times that we are in the biggest recession since the great depression. I’m sure you all know this line, right? While we are in this recession, and make no bones about it, we are still in the recession; our government is running up the government debt limit to the max.

This spending bill of course came with tons and tons of pork. I thought Obama was going to get a handle on the pork spending and “change the way Washington runs” with “transparency” and “CSPAN meetings”. This bill has 5,000+ earmarks or pork/pet spending projects built in to this bill, which equals to $3.9 billon dollars.

A few examples:
-$2.7M to University of Nebraska for Surgical Operations in space.
-$200k for a Public Market
-$30k for the Woodstock film festival youth initiative
-$200k for a new visitor center in a Texas town with a population of about 8,000

You can find a better list of the spending of your money at HERE.

Not all of the pork is from spending Democrats. FoxNews.com reports that “Republicans, though, have hardly shied away from the earmarks. Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., is pushing $200,000 for the Washington National Opera. Sen. Judd Gregg, a fiscal hawk, is behind a $1 million earmark for renovation at the Portsmouth Music Hall.”

With Congress trying to expand the debt ceiling without cutting any federal spending one can only wonder how long until the U.S. credit becomes damaged. We are spending Billions, even Trillions like it’s Monopoly money. Right now we are writing checks for $1 billion dollars a week just for interest. Please note, this has nothing to do with healthcare cost going up. It’s an out of control spending that is an issue. Remember, the law makers report to us so call someone, write someone, and be heard.
