Makes one wonder how many others there would be if so many hadn't been cut down during the ages of sailing ships. Story @ Britain's mightiest oak

Oaks were considered the holy trees back when people believed in lots of gods and such. The holy groves were always oaks.
This one's a beaut. Thanks.

Not far from me is the oldest Live Oak known, 1,000-1,500 years old. It looks like several trees but it's actually the huge branches too heavy to support themselves touching the ground. Somehow it survived the Wild West days. Have some ancient oaks on my property too, probably 500 years old.

I've only visited the South twice, but the live oaks are truly one of the highlights; that and grits. Live Oaks grow out west too?

Yeah. There are two types. One sheds its leaves in the winter and the other doesn't. Many California Indian tribes made the acorns their main supplement, grinding them up into meal. For the uninitiated, the untreated nuts are quite sour and often cause upset stomachs.

During the 1769 Portola expedition, the starving soldiers saw Indians eating them, picking them up from the ground. They ate so many they threw them up - followed by severe bouts of the runs.

I like this old oak tree! It's a little scruffy but it has got character. An old country tree that has weathered many a storm and still standing straight as an arrow! This is one tough tree!
