This seems to be quite unique in the sport. Almost like a rugby move. Why isnt it used more often because the defence did not have a clue how to deal with it ?

It's not used more often, because it usually doesn't work. It's a desperation move used at the end of a game. Also, this is a college game. In the pros the greater average speed of the defenders would normally shut it down.
