Add Maryland to States with a Secession Movement

These secessionist movements are pointless because liberals will do what they always have. Flood the conservative area with liberals then vote for libtards. It will just mean more senators for liberals. Liberals are like locusts. They will consume everything, then move on to a new place to destroy.

If they become separate countries, then the new countries can limit immigration of ticks who only want to suck on the ass of society.

What is the big deal?

When Conservatives don't get their way they try to take their ball and go home. People in their state don't vote the way they like so they want to make their own state

Playground mentality

In other words, you don't believe in freedom of choice.

Is that what you're saying?

Actually, it's a story of three Marylands. There's the Eastern Shore, the Western Shore (central Maryland/ the Balto-Washington area), and the pan handle. People from the Eastern Shore and pan handle have been talking about seceding from the state since as long as I can remember. There's several reasons why, but mainly have to do with the fact that these three areas are very different from each other. The pan handle and Eastern Shore are both very rural areas, while central Maryland is very urban. Central Maryland pretty much dominates politically due to the area comprising the bulk of the state's population. The other regions often feel that they are neglected. Due to Baltimore being the only large city in the state, the Mayorialship of Baltimore has historically been a proving ground for the Governorship. It's extremely difficult for potential candidates outside of central Maryland to gain sufficient notoriety to be serious candidates.

Secession has typically been a hotter topic on the Eastern Shore because it is much more isolated from the rest of the state, and it is by far stands alone compared to the other two regions in terms of culture, etc. In some ways, the talk has increased slightly in recent years, after the defeat of Wayne Gilchrist in the 2008 Congressional primary by Baltimorian Andy Harris. The Shore comprises an entire Congressional district. While Gilchrest was a native of the Eastern Shore and could reasonably represent the area, gerrymandering cut a slice from the Shore to Baltimore, allowing Harris to run, and in the opinion of many people further represents the fact that the state government has a complete disregard for that half of the state.

Despite the ample reasons that many people from the Eastern Shore and pan handle regions for feeling neglected by the state government, secession is generally reserved to the fringe elements of the population. Some people have long grown apathetic to the negligence of the state and have concluded that simply going on with one's life is the best way to spend their cares. Others do not feel that it is politically feasible to stand as a separate state. Meanwhile, there are yet others who have any desire to secede regardless of their dissatisfaction with the state government.

SCOTUS interprets the Constitution. What the Constitution or Bill of Rights might say doesn't superceed a latter SCOTUS ruling. Why secessionists and 'soverign citizens' types get into trouble, they think it does. It doesn't.

Actually, the Constitution does supersede anything Congress or the Supreme Court may decide. That's why it's written in plain English. Anyone can see that Congress violated the terms of the Constitution when it created the state of West Virginia.

We have had 50 states for over 50 years. We have not had a section of a state break off in 150 years. The idea that tiny populations can throw a hissy fit and create new states every time a vote goes against them is ludicrous. They do not deserve two Senators

Realistically, those sections that want to break off receive more state services than they pay for. Those rural states lack the economic engine to sustain themselves and would be one big welfare state

Now add New York to the list.

Secession movement in New York pushes for Big Apple to split from Upstate - Washington Times

Campaigns for “secession” or a 51st state have been on the rise since the 2012 presidential election — see California, Colorado and Maryland — but the New York movement has a twist.

Instead of splitting New York into two distinct states, advocates want one state controlled by two autonomous regional governments.

The state would retain a “token” presence, funded by the 3 percent sales tax, and would remain united for federal purposes such as the Electoral College and congressional seats. But the power on all state matters would be transferred to the regions.

The downstate region would be called New York and include the counties of Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens, Richmond, Nassau, Rockland, Suffolk and Westchester — basically New York City and its neighboring counties, including Long Island.

I actually think these people have the most legitimate case to be made. New York is a huge state, but it's pretty much controlled by the politicians in the city. The upstate certainly has the economy to sustain itself without NYC and Long Island and the politics of the two regions are polar opposites.

Again, you are totally, 100%, completely wrong.

I gave the stats for Maryland, but you are too much of an ignoramus with your head up your ass to bother reading anything, lol.

Lol, in short; a bad situation where two thirds of the state geographically are disenfranchised and have no representative government in essence other than a state rep and Senator who are so much in the permanent minority that they will never get a damn thing their constituents need passed.

But the people who want to fix it are fringe while the people who give up and just apathetically don't give a shit are the norm.

Well, that explains a lot about what is screwing this country up.

Sounds like the fringe needs to take over.

:eusa_eh:

That is not what I said at all. They are not disenfranchised. They have equal representation in the state government as any other area of the state.

It's very clear that you don't know anything about Maryland, its people, or its politics. That you make such a patently false claim that these two regions have nothing more than a single state representative (actually, we call them Delegates) proves this. The five counties from western Maryland that we are talking about have 15 total delegates representing them in the HOD, and 6 Senators in the Senate. The Eastern Shore has 9-12 Delegates (depending what a person considers to be the "Eastern Shore") and 3 or 4 Senators (same dependency).

Considering that the two areas comprise about 13.6% of the state's population, but their representation in the HOD comprises about 18% of the total delegation, it can easily be argued that these areas have disproportionate representation in the state government.

But the people who want to fix it are fringe while the people who give up and just apathetically don't give a shit are the norm.

The five counties of Western Maryland have a total population of nearly 660,000 people. That 8000 people want the area to break away from the rest of the state means that it's a position supported by a mere 1.2% of the region. A drastic action supported by a small slither of the people involved is the very definition of "fringe."
