When Kennedy made his moon announcement the technology to carry out the mission didn't exist. He challenged the space community, private industry, etc. to get it done.

Today, the technology exists to build the tunnel. But Gov. Christie inherited - though he doesn't constantly blame Corzine for it a la Barry boy - a state government with deep financial problems. And the tunnel project if allowed to go forward would cost billions of dollars the state doesn't have. It would add to its already staggering debt. So Christie made the appropriate call to shit can the project.

If you want to trash a Republican find a topic that doesn't make you look like a complete fool.

We got to the moon because people were concerned about the Russians having the ability to mount something like Reagan wanted (remember SDI?)

As far as poverty and the rest, I dare say if you would look at the same history since Johnson's great society until now, we have spent FAR MORE on the war on poverty than we ever spent on the space race.
