When Naomi Wolf was lecturing during the Bush administration she was roundly scoffed at as a loon by Conservatives. Now she makes sense?

Really? Then you shouldn't have a problem defending her now. Why is that you think the take over will happen over night? You should be saying welcome aboard.

I didn't defend her then.

I thought Bush was doing some very assinine things..that were roundly Unconstitutional. But I did not..and still do not think he was going for a dictatorship.

I don't think Bush himself was pushing for a dictatorship, but Cheney was certainly a fan of the "Unitary Executive," and many of the posters here on USMB are too.

The Problem I had with Bush is that he's put in place a great many of the tools that can one day be used to introduce a Dictatorship. Capital "D". The Department of Homeland Security is currently too inept to be the tool of a dictator, but a competent administrator at the head of it and the DHS suddenly looks pretty terrifying. The ability to declare a natural born US citizen an enemy combatant and send them to Gitmo originated under Bush too.

Heck, we've had threads right here on USMB where people actively supported targetting Natural Born US Citizens for assassination once they were declared an enemy combatant.

If anything, we've been lucky that Bush and Obama have been flat out too incompetent to actually realize the tools they now have at their disposal, but time is running out. Once a truly intellegent person gets the Oval Office, if Executive Power isn't rolled back you'll have a situation on your hands that dwarfs Watergate easily.

At first, the people who are sent there are seen by citizens as outsiders: troublemakers, spies, "enemies of the people" or "criminals". Initially, citizens tend to support the secret prison system; it makes them feel safer and they do not identify with the prisoners. But soon enough, civil society leaders - opposition members, labour activists, clergy and journalists - are arrested and sent there as well.

When they make the jump from "Enemy Combatants" to the above, then she might have a case.

I do not support that classification or Guantanimo, however I don't believe the situation had deteriorated to the first example much less the last.

she already has a case. Her case is that this same exact path into fascism was already followed by both Germany and Itlay and even more brutal regimes too it further in Russia and China and Cambodia.

In the 30's there actually was a plot to over throw the US government and install a fascist coup.

It can happen here, just as it has happened elsewhere, but more on point it may already be happening here.

We are just one sociopathic president away from becoming Nazi Germany.

We're not a dictatorship yet. We still have some more stages to go through before we arrive there.

But, we are currently a Plutocracy which has the potential, given a full blown Depression, to morph into corporate fascism, which of course would have to be headed by a dictator.

Bush pretty much put the tools on the table that a competent person could use to take over the Country. At this point, Obama hasn't had to do anything, just continue Bush's policies. The fact that this is exactly what Obama has been doing (continuing Bush's policies) is the reason many on the Left are ticked off at Obama.

The Unitary Executive that Cheney championed has to be rolled back, or inside a few generations there'll be a Constitutional Crisis that makes Watergate look like a walk in the park.
