10 steps to a dictatorship

Have you forgotten about the place you screamed about and said it should be closed? After all obama said he was going to close it this year. The shit is right under your nose and you can't see it, that is unless Bush was still president.

But your little plagiarized diatribe wasn't talking about gitmo, it was talking about labor camps, a' la Nazism. Of course Gitmo isn't closed. Guess who just said NO!! Again, Obama can't simply issue an executive order to close it.

Do you want to read the first sentance in that post one more time?

Create a gulag

Once you have got everyone scared, the next step is to create a prison system outside the rule of law (as Bush put it, he wanted the American detention centre at Guantánamo Bay to be situated in legal "outer space") - where torture takes place.

Really? obama can't sign an excutive ordser closing gitmo?
Obama signs order to close Guantanamo Bay facility

Obama signs order to close Guantanamo Bay facility - CNN

Gitmo was designated for a specific use: Terrorists captured on the battlefields during the Iraq/Afghanistan wars, not for housing political dissenters which is what you people have been discussing. Geezus...

An Executive Order is a commitment to do something; it isn't an "order" intending to circumvent legislative power.

Why are you :clap2: this reply it was busted two pages back.

When? Oh, by YOU? Now that IS funny. Look, I know you really try to come off as well-read and stuff and an expert on all things, and I suppose you're at least to be commended for being interested in all these subjects. But you really need to expand your knowledge on almost all of it. A snappy one-liner attempting to refute clear statements based on factual information just doesn't cut it.

Expert? It's experts that has fucked this country up, so nope I am not an expert. I use common sense something that you are lacking.

Well then let's hear your common sense solutions that can effectively be put in motion, bearing in mind that we're a country of 305 million diverse people.

"Change" is what anyone who runs for office campaigns on. If not change, why bother? Obama, like any and all new presidents before him, thought he could outwit the Washington system. And like every and all new presidents, discovered to his dismay that it takes more than convincing words when you're up against a professional army of veteran lobbyists with fistfuls of cash.

Have you seen any change since obama became President?

Some small, some big, some good, some controversial. They haven't been sitting around picking their noses. Perhaps you or someone else here could pick a few out of this list that represent a removal of one of your freedoms.

People we need to get away from our partisanships. The Government does not care for the people of this country. They will give justr enough to make the people move the way they want them to move. Here are 10 steps you do not have to respond just look at the steps and ask yourself does any of this look familure? Be honest with yourself time is short.

1. Invoke a terrifying internal and external enemy
2. Create a gulag
3. Develop a thug caste
4. Set up an internal surveillance system
5. Harass citizens' groups
6. Engage in arbitrary detention and release
7. Target key individuals
8. Control the press
9. Dissent equals treason
10. Suspend the rule of law

When Naomi Wolf was lecturing during the Bush administration she was roundly scoffed at as a loon by Conservatives. Now she makes sense?

Woah..what's changed?

So there you go again with your complete lack of knowledge. This government IS the most transparent of any other in history. You can Google just about everything unclassified. You can watch government hearings on C-Span. You can follow the progression of every bill through Congress at opencongress.org AND read exact quotes from the parties making those laws. The Freedom of Information Act was brought out from behind closed doors once again. Can you be privy to every private meeting or whispers in the hallways? Well not yet, unless there are leaks.

Okay, then, the first shot is at dawn. Now go get drunk, for everyone will be dead in a fortnight. Happy? :cuckoo:

I am sure you will stand with a dictator that is if he is wearing your political colors.

See it's ignorant comments like that which put a big FAIL stamp on everything you said. Everything.

I'm tring to point out the signs that show we are heading in that direction and you scoff at it. Read some memoirs of Germans that lived during that time.

Really? Then you shouldn't have a problem defending her now. Why is that you think the take over will happen over night? You should be saying welcome aboard.

I didn't defend her then.

I thought Bush was doing some very assinine things..that were roundly Unconstitutional. But I did not..and still do not think he was going for a dictatorship.

I don't think Bush himself was pushing for a dictatorship, but Cheney was certainly a fan of the "Unitary Executive," and many of the posters here on USMB are too.

The Problem I had with Bush is that he's put in place a great many of the tools that can one day be used to introduce a Dictatorship. Capital "D". The Department of Homeland Security is currently too inept to be the tool of a dictator, but a competent administrator at the head of it and the DHS suddenly looks pretty terrifying. The ability to declare a natural born US citizen an enemy combatant and send them to Gitmo originated under Bush too.

Heck, we've had threads right here on USMB where people actively supported targetting Natural Born US Citizens for assassination once they were declared an enemy combatant.

If anything, we've been lucky that Bush and Obama have been flat out too incompetent to actually realize the tools they now have at their disposal, but time is running out. Once a truly intellegent person gets the Oval Office, if Executive Power isn't rolled back you'll have a situation on your hands that dwarfs Watergate easily.

I don't think Bush was stupid, he just wasn't up for the job. And you are right about Cheney..damn that guy was and is..a loon. Obama is really intelligent..and if you look at what he's done..it's been pretty much in keeping with the "process" of the government as perscribed in the United States Constitution.

But you have a point. Our government, as it is now, backed by the sort of military we have..is very seductive to those that would gloam power.

We're one truly ambitious and intelligent man away from a Dictatorship at this point. I'm not fear mongering, I'm just pointing out that the "Unitary Executive" that Cheney helped push for has the kinds of powers that would have made the Founders get itchy trigger fingers.

We are most certainly not a dictatorship yet. And we are most certainly not at the point that violence is even an option. But we are at the point where we need to start having a real discussion about how much power we're willing to allow the Executive Branch to continue to have. This is a conversation that desperately needs to be non-partisan.

The problem is the Partisans always back power grabs by their people, which means they look like hypocrites when they complain about the other side grabbing power. This "It's ok cause my party did it" mentality absolutely has to stop.

Let's not forget about the crazs.

Czars in their historical context do not exist in the US government period. That anyone thinks they do is a testement to the power of popular media. It is merely a rhetorical ploy.

Fear the President, he has czars. Hahahaha

They do exist sorry even Reagan had as couple. They answer only to obama or the president and make up policy's at their discreation.

The term Czar was actually coined by President Nixon and is only a nick name for any position with a cumbersome title. They are directors of policy departments and most (I don't know exact numbers) were established by prior administrations with little or no controversy. It is basically a kin to calling the Poster Master General the "Mail Czar." George W Bush even had a Bird Flu Czar.

It is merely a rhetorical ploy use to frighten the sheeple.

With a comment like this I see there is no hope for you. As I said as long as the dictator wears your political colors you will fall right in line.

Didn't you say obama had not signed a presidental order closing gitmo?
Jan 22, 2009 Closure Of Guantanamo Detention Facilities

I had forgotten he actually signed an EO making that commitment. My bad. Score one for you. But EOs are still not enforceable.

Yes I think they are enforcable until they are written off by the president or the next elected president. Why else have a presidental order?

Actually it wasn't nixion who coined the pharse but the name was used by the media of the time.

I agree. Lets start with the TSA. By law airports do not have to use the TSA they can use private security like they use to.

But the law did allow a test program in which five airports were allowed to use private contractors. A number of studies done since then have shown that contractors perform a bit better than federal screeners, and they're also more flexible and open to innovation. (The federal government pays the cost of screening whether performed by the TSA or by contractors, and contractors work under federal supervision.)
