Claim

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi blocked the National Guard from responding to the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Origin

On July 27, 2021, a bipartisan group of politicians began their investigation into the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 by hearing testimony and posing questions to four police officers from the U.S. Capitol Police and Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department. As this hearing got underway, members of the Republican Party, including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, held a press conference in which they attempted to place partial blame for the attack on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

McCarthy made similar accusations during an appearance on Fox News a week prior. During that appearance, the minority leader posed the question: “Was there a decision by the Speaker not to have the National Guard at the Capitol that day?”
Pelosi did not prevent the National Guard from responding to the attack on the Capitol. Pelosi does not have direct control of the National Guard.

Jane L. Campbell, president and CEO of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society, told CNN: “The Speaker of the House does not oversee security of the U.S. Capitol, nor does this official oversee the Capitol Police Board.”
There are still some questions as to why Capitol Police appeared ill-prepared for the attack and why the National Guard’s response was delayed. We looked more into those questions here. Generally speaking, however, the National Guard in Washington, D.C., reports to the president of the United States. Neither the speaker of the House (Pelosi), nor the minority leader of the Senate (Mitch McConnell), has control of the National Guard.
The D.C. National Guard writes on its websites (emphasis ours):

The Capitol Police Board, which oversees the Capitol Police, did request assistance from the National Guard after the riot broke loose. While a member of this board, the House sergeant-at-arms, does report to Pelosi.

Now even NBC says its true.

Liberal "fact checkers" like Politifact and Washington Post got it wrong. BOWSER turned them down. That's not on Trump.

"Liberal “fact-checkers” like The Washington Post and PolitiFact argued the claim about National Guard assistance coming from Meadows and other top Trump administration officials was false, but an official timeline of the events leading up to Jan. 6 apparently shows differently."

"According to the timeline, a DOD official reached out to Capitol Police Deputy Chief Sean Gallagher four days before the attack on the U.S. Capitol to inquire about whether Capitol Police anticipated they would request National Guard troops be deployed to prepare for Jan. 6.

“Carol Corbin (DOD) texts USCP Deputy Chief Sean Gallagher, Protective Service Bureau, to determine whether USCP is considering a request for National Guard soldiers for January 6, 2021 event,” the timeline reads in an entry listed for Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021.

The next morning, the timeline indicates, “Gallagher replies to DOD via text that a request for National Guard support not forthcoming at this time after consultation with COP Sund.”

"Mayor for the District of Columbia, Muriel Bowser, wrote a letter to Miller and other Departments of Defense and Justice officials asking that National Guard troops not be deployed unless the local Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) approved."

The letter Bowser wrote is right here: Can't deny it liberals: He said that the metropolitan police department would protect the capitol, and they didn't. Letter dated Jan 5th:

But but but Orange man bad.

Why does your thread title say trump ordered 20,000 guards on standby?

The DC National Guard have 1100 active duty guard members....NOT 20,000???????

1100 DC National Guard..... Who Trump is commanding.....so where did the 20,000 number come from? Or the 10,000 mentioned earler, offered to Capitol?

Even after the attack, by the following Saturday, the Capitol had only 7000 national guard that had arrived from other surrounding states, and it got to about 10,000 getting there from other states, about a week after the attack.

So again, what is all this boasting coming from Trump about 10,000 guard offered and 20,000 guard offered?
