"Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder and Suicide?

I broke the lamp. No he did.................................

It's the neighbors kids fault.

Lets punish him for the act of our kids.

aka Liberal Mantra. Punish the innocent for the acts of the guilty.

I would consider USSR equally developed as the USA

Um.....spot the person who has never been to Russia.

btw. There is no USSR. It's called Russia these days. Good to see you keep up with the news!
Until it fell apart, it was the USSR...Union of Soviet Socialist Republics Commonly called Soviet Union or Russia...

Despite its name being changing, it was a developed country then (they beat us into orbit...and almost beat us to the moon...we now send astronauts up in Russian rockets)...tell me they're not a developed country...and weren't developed when known as the USSR. You'll be a fool if you do.

Not to pick a nit, but the Soviet Union was not just Russia with a different name.

Funny...it was called both during my childhood. Regardless, it's not the least bit arguable that "it" was or is not a developed country.

broad cross-national comparisons should show that nations with higher gun ownership per capita consistently have more death.
And obviously they show exactly that.

The fact the only examples you can up with are war zones like Mexico and Russia tells us that you also know that facts are not on your side.

Any minute now, the OP will triumph how much better the US is doing compared with Zimbabwe, Colombia or Iraq.

Did you read your chart?

Didn't think so.

Why is it that Mexico and Russia is deemed a war zone by you? And even if so, does that negate their "developed world" status?

Seriously?

I think you can answer the first question well enough yourself, can't you?

In some contexts it may make sense to compare Mexico or Russia with the US, but obviously a dozen better points of comparison exist - Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Italy, the UK, Spain, Japan, South Korea or even Holland all have much more in common with the US than Russia does.

Neither Russia or Mexico are even close to being war zones.

And obviously they show exactly that.

You're showing gun murder you fucking idiot. Why don't you show murders in general?
Non firearm murders? 2010 the U.S. had over 4000 non firearm murders.

They posted a link to prove their point.

Question is..................do YOU have a link to prove yours?

I'm guessing you don't.

Saigon did not post a link to prove his point. I, however, did.

So what's your solution, comrade? Do we ban guns? Then what? Are you going to confiscate the 3 or 400 million guns in the country? Go for it.

The USSR was one of the poorest societies I've ever seen...people lived in staggering poverty. Everywhere you went, buildings were in ruins, there was often no hot water, no electricity and little food.

Russia is much more developed, but it is still riddled with corruption, and entire cities are run by the mafia. This last point is why the gun stats tend to be slightly hazy....!

My chart is from WaPo. The link has been posted here a dozen times, so I assume most people have seen it before. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2012/12/14/chart-the-u-s-has-far-more-gun-related-killings-than-any-other-developed-country/

Funny how the anti gun nuts never mentions studies like this.

If the mantra "more guns equal more death and fewer guns equal less death" were true, broad cross-national comparisons should show that nations with higher gun ownership per capita consistently have more death. Nations with higher gun ownership rates, however, do not have higher murder or suicide rates than those with lower gun ownership. Indeed many high gun ownership nations have much lower murder rates.

I am sure Saigon will pop in here and blather about gun homicides being higher in countries with guns, so I want to through this out.

Russia has gun ownership rate of 1 in 40,000, yet has a murder rate that is 4 times higher than the US.

Why do you want to discuss the ban on all firearms? Very, very few want to do so, so what purpose do you have in posting this thread?

Neither Russia or Mexico are even close to being war zones.

Actually, with the war that the country is having with the drug cartels, much of the larger cities of Mexico (especially around the border with the U.S.) are in fact very much like war zones.

Neither Russia or Mexico are even close to being war zones.

You may have missed this in the news...

Mexican Drug WAR

Although Mexican drug cartels, or drug trafficking organizations, have existed for several decades, they have become more powerful since the demise of the Colombian Cali and Medellín cartels in the 1990s. Mexican drug cartels now dominate the wholesale illicit drug market and in 2007 controlled 90% of the cocaine entering the United States.Arrests of key cartel leaders, particularly in the Tijuana and Gulf cartels, has led to increasing drug violence as cartels fight for control of the trafficking routes into the United States.

Analysts estimate that wholesale earnings from illicit drug sales range from $13.6 billion[33] to $49.4 billion annually.

By the end of Felipe Calderón's administration (2006–2012), the official death toll of the Mexican Drug War was at least 60,000, although unconfirmed accounts set the homicide rate above 100,000 victims, given the large number of people who have disappeared

This of course is precisely the reason that countries like Mexico and Russia are used by NRA lackeys as points of comparison with the US - the only countries with homicide rates anything like comparable with yours ARE war zones.

Your chart does not support your point.

Let me rephrase that, you are wrong, fuck off.

Juarez is the largest border city in Mexico, is there any part of it that looks remotely like this?

82% of Americans say U.S. is losing the 'war on drugs' - NY Daily News

Does that make the US, or Mexico, a war zone?

I'll come back to this thread later and respond to any coherent points.

Translation.

I really can't prove I am right, and I know that Quantum Windbag has posted evidence that I am a complete idiot, but I refuse to admit that guns do not kill people without any input from people.
