Work Requirements for SNAP take Effect This Month (February)

from my logical standpoint it's like a ROTH, your money you invest like a 401K except it's only your money not being matched

SS is still your money in a government controlled fund

if a ROTH is 59 1/2 which is and odd number at 60 you should be able to get your full payout

our government likely puts it into very mild "safe" funds for lower risk but lower reward

start working at 18-60 that is 42 years, work construction that is some serious wear and tear on the body
working a desk job, not so much
LOL, I was a blue collar worker my entire career and I find it amazing that many desk jockeys are in worse shape than labor at retirement age.

65 is a bit high, imagine a guy who is 63 being forced to work for walmart
If 62 is retirement then 62 should be the max I would think

then again if you are close to 62 and actually worked all your life you should
have plenty of money for food
I get it, and I like your thinking.

But 62 is retirement for people who worked and put into social security or a job like teaching that has its own retirement plan.

It happens that I'm 63 myself, and I get my old wrinkled butt out of bed at 5:45 Mon-Fri and go work.

I have a job that I love, and I keep working even though I just became eligible to retire. I don't want to take the income cut, and I don't want to end up like so many male retirees who deteriorate quickly and kick the bucket soon after getting the proverbial gold watch. Given the choice between sitting at home arguing all day on the internet, or "welcome to Walmart, get your crap and leave," I believe I'd take the latter.

Still, if making the max age for the work requirement 59 or even 55 would make the cuts more palatable, I'd be fine with that. Something that could have been negotiated if the Democrats did not stick with their apocolyptic language regarding any cuts at all.

I get that Some people regret not making better choices when they were young and it is too late for them to make those choices.

If I had my way, all welfare would be administered through the group home model, so everyone gets healthy food, and a roof, but doesn't get to live on junk food and use free cash to buy other consumables.

I went when I was 62-1/4 and took the penalty. Best thing I ever did. The last twelve years have been GRRRRRRREAT! LOL.

Yes, about three weeks out of four.

Lots of the people punching time clocks and being taxed to pay for SNAP would love to only need to work three weeks out of four.
Oh by all means… quit your job to get that $160 a month

On a simple note. How long does someone get that 160 dollars a month? We must investigate these things. With the abilities to cheat and steal from the system. However, yeah you type the guilt propaganda.

So you can only get assistance if you have a job?

Cant working people buy food?

Yeah, they've been raising it incrementally for years. When I went, 12 years ago, the age was 66 years 8 mo. I went early and paid a price in reduced benefits.
I'm trying to stick with working until 67, mainly so Mrs Flops' survivor benefits are as large as possible.

But I'm not driving a UPS truck any more or some other job that takes a toll on the body.
Personally, I believe the retirement age should be what it was when you first entered the workforce. Seems a bit of bait and switch.
It was never going to be what they sold it as: each of us paying into an account in which our money would be kept and invested until time for us to retire.

From the beginning, money paid into social security was immediately transferred to the treasury general fund through the vehicle of purchasing special-issue treasury securities.

When people began retiring and collecting social security, it was paid out of SS payroll taxes being collected, not from any successful investment. A classic pyramid scheme bound to collapse sooner or later.

When the SS Administration has to cash bonds to make up the difference between payroll taxes collected and benefits paid out, the money comes from income taxes and other federal revenues.

People should have screamed louder the first time they raised the age to collect social security benefits. Touching social security is supposed to be the third rail of politics. But I don't know of a single elected official who was thrown out because of that.

There is no bottom to that well. To stay afloat, they merely need to keep raising the minimum age. for example, I am sixty three and planning to start collecting at sixty seven. What would prevent them from raising the age to seventy before I turn sixty seven?

Effective today, Sunday, Feb 1, 2026:

  • Under the bill, able-bodied individuals between the ages of 18 and 65 without dependents must work or attend a work program, such as SNAP Employment and Training, at least 80 hours per month to receive benefits. Previously, the top age was 55.
  • It also requires parents and household members to meet the additional work requirements if a dependent child is aged 14 or older. Previously, those with a child under 18 were exempt from the requirements.
  • Veterans, people 24 and under who recently aged out of foster care, and unhoused people are no longer exempt from work requirements.
  • It also restricted states’ ability to temporarily extend benefits beyond three months in areas where the number of jobs is insufficient. Now, they may only request a waiver if the unemployment rate in an area meets or exceeds 10%.
These requirements seem so common sensical that it is hard to remember why there was such stong objection to them.

I'm actually surprised at how lenient the program still is.
On the first day of Black history month? These people can’t figure out how to get an ID so they can vote and now you’re making them work to get $? What’s wrong with you

He’s a racist workist

Same here, almost. (64.5 for me.) The place I was working for got shut down (it's a long story and an interesting one even involving politics!) and I talked to a couple of advisers and said, screw it, I'm done. Yeah, I took a hit but I wasn't gonna put on a damn suit and tie and interview for jobs I knew I'd never get because of age discrimination anyway.

Someone I know is getting $1000+ a month, tax-free. She is given so much in free food stamps that she has steaks in the freezer. In the meantime, people who work for a living buy hamburger.

I'll bet she's right.
Of course I’m right. A girl in her 20s, who has never had a job, will get about $1100 a month if she’s had four illegitimate children. Tax-free.

And that’s just the food stamps. She’ll get medical care for herself and the four kids. Plus, there’s TANF, subsidized housing, reduced utility bills, reduced public transportation, and on and on.

I know for a fact that welfare recipients buy expensive steaks at upscale grocery stores, and STILL have food money left over.

He's naive about just how corrupt the welfare state is. And it's all coming out of our pockets.

TANF has work requirements and a 60 month LIFETIME limit

I “know for a fact” that you are a hateful dishonest “person”
