I get it, and I like your thinking.
But 62 is retirement for people who worked and put into social security or a job like teaching that has its own retirement plan.
It happens that I'm 63 myself, and I get my old wrinkled butt out of bed at 5:45 Mon-Fri and go work.
I have a job that I love, and I keep working even though I just became eligible to retire. I don't want to take the income cut, and I don't want to end up like so many male retirees who deteriorate quickly and kick the bucket soon after getting the proverbial gold watch. Given the choice between sitting at home arguing all day on the internet, or "welcome to Walmart, get your crap and leave," I believe I'd take the latter.
Still, if making the max age for the work requirement 59 or even 55 would make the cuts more palatable, I'd be fine with that. Something that could have been negotiated if the Democrats did not stick with their apocolyptic language regarding any cuts at all.
I get that Some people regret not making better choices when they were young and it is too late for them to make those choices.
If I had my way, all welfare would be administered through the group home model, so everyone gets healthy food, and a roof, but doesn't get to live on junk food and use free cash to buy other consumables.
