“Work” As A Defining Characteristic

Clarification. About 15% of the population need the assistance from us. I have done a lot of financial work for the working poor over the years and was a MASH unit for financial rescue. Along the way saw personal and family horrors and hardships that would make every woman here burst in tears, especially the kids involved

The problem with our Freddy Freeloader welfare system is these 15% get the scraps left over from the people benefiting for sitting on their asses drinking beer and smoking reefer making bastards all day long

Americans are the most charitable people on earth....specifically conservative Americans.

This is worth reading:

Marvin Olasky, in "The Tragedy of American Compassion," explains that human needs were taken care of by other human beings- not by bureaucracies. The important difference was that the latter may take care of food and shelter...but the former also dealt with the human spirit and behavior.
Welfare programs today, are Liberal….conservatives don’t look for material solutions, but understand that changing values is what solves the problem of poverty..

Oh yeah. Back then a typical street had a whole socioeconomic population. Wealthier people assisted less fortunate on the street along with churches and charities

But my references were about today and the realities. Now we take better care of our illegal alien children than our own. So corrupt

It is the same today.

Americans are world's most charitable, top 1% provide 1/3rd of all donations

Americans are a charitable group, in fact the most generous in the world, according to the new Almanac of American Philanthropy.

The much maligned top 1 percent in the U.S. economy fork over one third of all donations made. Even in death.

"The wealthiest 1.4 percent of Americans are responsible for 86 percent of the charitable donations made at death," said the survey conducted by Public Opinion research.

What's more, Republicans appear to give bigger gifts, but Democrats pour in the smaller donations in a big number. Said the survey analysis, "If, however, you zero in on giving that is heavier or lighter than the middle range you find that the parties differ a lot. Democrats and Independents both had many zero-to-very-light givers (less than $100 for the year), and modest numbers of heavier givers. Republicans, in comparison, had comparatively few skinflints, and numerous serious donors — 31 percent sharing at least $1,000 with charity, versus 17 percent among Democrats, and 20 percent among Independents."

Americans also have high hopes for charities, choosing them over government agencies to solve the nation's social problems, by a margin of 47 percent to 32 percent. And as a result, they want to protect tax deductions for charity, 66 percent to 21 percent.

his day, City Journal just happens to provide an essay entitled:

"American Charity
The philanthropic tradition is what makes America different from other nations.

"America’s philanthropic tradition can be traced to the ideals that animated its founding. In Europe, nations were built by kings and despots. Though they have long been citizens with the full scope of democratic rights, Europeans still expect more from their governments than Americans do. In the United States, citizenship came first. The government was built by voluntary association. To this day, Americans expect individuals to exhaust all options for caring for themselves before turning to the government for help. “Philanthropy,” writes Zinsmeister, “is a huge part of what makes America America.

The proportion of Americans who participate in philanthropic activities—70 percent—is higher than the number who vote. In economic terms, philanthropy amounts to approximately 10 percent of GDP. No other country invests as much money and energy in the nonprofit sector.”
American Charity

For real Americans.

Its bad out here in California

I see lots of young people homeless picking up bottles and cans with no desire to change their surroundings. One kid was interviewed by the paper saying he makes a couple hundred a day begging for money at Circle K.

The rest of the shitlibs think they will have it made once the "communist revolution" happens. They'll have their dream jobs of being therapist, book readers to little kids, gardeners or making clothes in their local Chaz/Chop

Just like Chaz/Chop a ruling class will take over. The very idea of a classless society will never work for that reason. There will always be a ruling class over the working class. And the useless will be lined against a wall

I'm far from an optimist....I believe it is too late to save America or Western Civilization.
The attitudes and values that made both great are in short supply.

Government school is all about worship of government and ending the nuclear family and treating everyone equally.

The Democrat Party is now running on full-blown anti-white racism,

socialism,

infanticide,

opposition to free speech,

standing with criminals and felons rather than law-abiding citizens

substituting illegal alien voters for the American citizenry,

support for rioters, arsonists, murderers, and anarchists,

accepting payment from Communist China for future considerations,

and anti-Semitism… the knuckle-dragging, atavistic pagan party.

And they are in charge.

We are simply circling the drain.

The pendulum always swings back and more and more people are waking up daily

5. The rationale for shutting down the entire economy for some nebulous benefits due to the covid flu was, in reality, an attack on Trump’s miracle economy and on every American worker.

“…we need to address the value of “work qua work” versus work as a means to put food on the table. Put differently, is the only role of work to earn an income or is there value to work in itself? Have we thought through the societal and individual consequences of this dilemma?

These questions can be illuminated by the Torah. In fact, it is among the first topics that the Torah deals with. Adam’s life in the Garden of Eden and his ultimate expulsion from that cocoon of workless income is a good starting point for the urgent debate we are having at the beginning of the twenty-first century, thirty years into the digital economic revolution.

Universal Basic Income (UBI) is hardly a new idea. …it is a theoretical public program providing a periodic payment to all citizens without a means test or work requirement. The advent of technology, however—specifically innovations like artificial intelligence—and the economic changes these developments bring, have pushed the idea to the forefront. In recent years, CEOs of technology companies like Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk and politicians across the spectrum have advocated UBI for every citizen.”
Michael Eisenberg, “The Tree of Life and Prosperity: 21st Century Business Principles from the Book of Genesis.”

Is America better with the Democrats shutting down the economy and paying people to stay home?

Universal Basic Income….guaranteed income…..the Green New Deal

6. Been there, done that….one more failure of Progressive/Democrat lack of understanding:

Proof? Sure. The government conducted a study, 1971-1978 known as the Seattle-Denver Income Maintenance Experiment, or SIME-DIME, in which low income families were give a guaranteed income, a welfare package with everything liberal policy makers could hope for. Result: for every dollar of extra welfare given, low income recipients reduced their labor by 80 cents. Policy Archive - A Digital Archive of Public Policy Research

[The results for husbands show that the combination of negative income tax plans tested in SIME/DIME — which, as already mentioned, represents on average a relatively generous cash transfer program with a guarantee of 115% of the poverty line and a tax rate of 50% — has a significant negative effect on hours worked per year. Overview of the Final Report of the Seattle-Denver Income Maintenance Experiment]

Further results: dissolution of families: “This conclusion was unambiguously unfavorable to advocates of a negative income tax that would cover married couples, for two important reasons. First, increased marital breakups among the poor would increase the numbers on

welfare and the amount of transfer payments, principally because the

separated wife and children would receive higher transfer payments.

Second, marital dissolutions and the usual accompanying absence of

fathers from households with children are generally considered unfavorable outcomes regardless of whether or not the welfare rolls increase.” http://www.bos.frb.org/economic/conf/conf30/conf30c.pdf

“When families received guaranteed income at 90% of the poverty level, there was a 43% increase in black family dissolution and a 63% increase in white family dissolution. At 125% of the poverty levels, dissolutions were 75% and 40%.” Robert B. Carleson, “Government Is The Problem,” p. 57.

Ontario is canceling its basic income experiment https://www.pbs.org/newshour/economy/making-sense/ontario-is-canceling-its-basic-income-experiment]

(Though the Progressive Conservatives had promised to preserve the pilot project, Social Services Minister Lisa MacLeod said the government reversed course after hearing from ministry staff that the program didn’t help people become “independent contributors to the economy.”

“It really is a disincentive to get people back on track,” she said Wednesday. Ontario government defends move to cancel basic income pilot project | Globalnews.ca)

I'm far from an optimist....I believe it is too late to save America or Western Civilization.
The attitudes and values that made both great are in short supply.
No to being too late for Western civilization. Most of the West is adapting to new leadership of China. And also 'no' for America being saved, however adjusting to accepting competition is needed.
Government school is all about worship of government and ending the nuclear family and treating everyone equally.
Treating people equally is a valid point.
The Democrat Party is now running on full-blown anti-white racism,
No, not to that extreme but somewhat true in that they are reacting against Trump's promotion of racism. His means of doing that have been discussed but I'm quite happy to revisit my opinions with you if you can keep it civil.
socialism,
Yes, in that socialist policies must be a part of capitalism. There's no real increase being proposed from what was normal pre-Trump. The establishment has corrupted the Dem party too.
infanticide,
Specifically abortion with which America is attempting to curtail women's rights.
opposition to free speech,
Freedom in general where America has fallen to 58th. in the world on freedom.
standing with criminals and felons rather than law-abiding citizens
America's prison system has become the world's example of failure. America lacks any kind of attitude of rehabilitation and so experiences record breaking recidivism.
substituting illegal alien voters for the American citizenry,
Not substituting but including in same small way. (needs discussion)
support for rioters, arsonists, murderers, and anarchists,
A counter reaction to extreme right violence and a plea from the black community for equality.
accepting payment from Communist China for future considerations,
That's too vague to make any sense. There is truth in the fact that America has permitted it's large corporations to take their business to China and employ China's labour there. Capitalism skipped town completely unimpeded.
and anti-Semitism… the knuckle-dragging, atavistic pagan party.
Yes, anti-semitism as a component of racism in America which crosses domestic political lines.
And they are in charge.
There's more momentum for the Republican party at the moment and slim hope for the D's and Biden in 22 and presumably in 24 too.
We are simply circling the drain.
Same as above.

I suspect that the political process will be suspended and violence will reign as a result of the Rittenhouse vedict. The show trial is the latest effort to legitimize extreme right murder by gun on the streets of America.

The Rittenhouse verdict will serve the purpose but the murder of Ahmaud Arbery could quite possibly go unpunished. either will be the signal to the Klan and associated rightwing extremists that Mississippi is burning again.

7. Investment banker Eisenberg continues, basing his view of work on the instruction manual for our civilization.

“The Torah takes a different view. Man’s labor is part of his essence. It is literally his life’s work for work gives life. Without it, his vitality suffers, and his procreation is inhibited. In a sense, the Torah believes that a lack of labor is corrosive to the human being. The absence of a labor of love will lead to a vacuum of love for the next generation. Man cannot live, in all senses, without work. This is not only true for individuals. Man’s labor is necessary for the earth itself to flourish and hence necessary for providing for humanity. It is necessary for the earth to evolve and bring forth its fruits. It is necessary to build future generation and to build the future.

…God’s planting of a garden in Eden rendered man’s labor unnecessary. God is the one who created the growth of trees that were “pleasing to the sight and good for food.”

This was the first experiment in the history of humanity—an experiment in which man received the equivalent of a universal basic income. In the Garden of Eden, man was granted everything he could possibly need, ready for use. He could exist without exerting any effort at all. … UBI is predicated on the assumption that it makes time and space for creativity and initiative, specifically in light of God’s blessing to man in Chapter 1, charging man to be fruitful and multiply and conquer the world.

He is no longer meant to remain planted in a static garden, since the garden is only intended to be his supportive framework. Instead, man is supposed to collect, pick, gather, and harness the strength of the flowing river to his own benefit.

…man needs to learn that it is proper to strive, act, and advance from within the supportive environment of the Garden.”

Yet, Democrat Green New Deal presupposes that it is perfectly acceptable for those who 'don't care to work' to be taken care of by the rest of us.

8. It appears that the Bible is pretty clear on work, nor is work considered a punishment.

“…an explicit task: “to cultivate it and to safeguard it.” This is the first divine command. The basic level of “and from the ground the Lord God caused to grow every tree that was pleasing to the sight and good for food” was established by God.

From this point onward, man would need to continue the work…. “Man was not placed in the Garden of Eden for his pleasure and enjoyment. He was rather placed there to fulfill his destiny, namely—‘to cultivate it.’” …“And He found it very good” is man, not existing simply as a biological being enjoying the world, but rather as a functional being who contributes, creates, and works.

But the fact that one needs to work at all is part of the primeval, primordial order, irrespective of any element of sin. This had been intended from the beginning. Simply put, this is indeed a perfect order, provided that man does his part. If man does not, then one of the pieces of the picture has fallen out, and the world is no longer perfect.

We need to work so that natural processes repeat themselves; if you do not contribute your share, the seasons come and go, but nature will not replenish itself.

While the former approach asserts that man was asked to maintain the world as God had created it, this answer claims that man was empowered and enjoined to create something better, as it were. In the absence of a real need to work, in an environment where his basic needs are guaranteed, the command “to cultivate it and safeguard it” does not endure for long. Man becomes bored again, and this time, he is brought to sin.”
Eisenberg, Op. Cit.

Amazing how we see exactly this patter under the welfare system, a warning from some three millennia ago.

Even the Socialist Saint and Godfather to the Democrat Party agreed:
"The lessons of history … show conclusively that continued dependence upon relief induces a spiritual and moral disintegration fundamentally destructive to the national fiber. To dole out relief in this way is to administer a narcotic, a subtle destroyer of the human spirit."

These searing words about Depression-era welfare are from Franklin Roosevelt's 1935 State of the Union Address.

8. It appears that the Bible is pretty clear on work, nor is work considered a punishment.
Most moderately intelligent people are clear on work but the bible isn't, in that it includes and legitimizes slavery, which is forced work by slave ownership.

Leviticus 25

44 “‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. 45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. 46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

You err by referencing your bible. Otherwise, in my opinion you get it right on work.

Slavery in the Bible is hardly comparable to the slavery of the folks with whom you identify, the Democrats.

And the ‘slavery’ represented in the Bible is in no way equivalent to that of the Democrat South.

The aspects that identify what we call 'slavery' today, the colloquial meaning, are the following:

a. permanence of bondage

b. treatment as material assets

c. control of the life and death of the slave: the slave could be beaten to death

d. an escaped slave had to be returned to his master….as decreed in the Dred Scott Democrat Supreme Court decision.
None of the above are allowed to the 'slave owner' by the Bible.

9. In so many ways we find Liberal and Progressive views running counter to the wisdom of the Bible.

An inverse correlation occurs when we look at the growth of Liberalism, versus the work ethic.

“After the Civil War, this secularized version of the Protestant ethic served as a lodestar for millions of poor immigrants, many from countries with little experience of free markets and democracy. Their assimilation into a culture that they recognized not as Protestant but as American reinvigorated the country, helping to set late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century America on a distinctly different path from much of Europe.

The breakup of this 300-year-old consensus on the work ethic began with the cultural protests of the 1960s, which questioned and discarded many traditional American virtues. The roots of this breakup lay in what Daniel Bell described in The Cultural Contradictions of Capitalism as the rejection of traditional bourgeois qualities by late-nineteenth-century European artists and intellectuals who sought “to substitute for religion or morality an aesthetic justification of life.” By the 1960s, that modernist tendency had evolved into a credo of self-fulfillment in which “nothing is forbidden, all is to be explored,” Bell wrote. Out went the Protestant ethic’s prudence, thrift, temperance, self-discipline, and deferral of gratification. Weakened along with all these virtues that made up the American work ethic was Americans’ belief in the value of work itself. Along with “turning on” and “tuning in,” the sixties protesters also “dropped out.” As the editor of the 1973 American Work Ethic noted, “affluence, hedonism and radicalism” were turning many Americans away from work and the pursuit of career advancement…” Whatever Happened to the Work Ethic?

You're mistaken again but I don't think you are purposely lying.

We must all face the grim reality that texts like these have been used to justify even the VILEST FORMS OF SLAVERY, such as that which was common in the AMERICAN SOUTH South before the Civil War.

At least we'll be able to agree that the Democrats were just as vile as Republicans and southern Americans in general.
Thanks for raising the topic, I have so much more I want to teach you about slavery and Christians pretending that they don't condone slavery.

I truly believe Christianity is the main reason why racism exists in America today and is close to getting back to what was practiced in the 60's. They trust their bibles!

That made it so easy for Trump to promote racism and hate.

I'm never wrong....and you are about to prove it.

"The Bible uses the Hebrew term eved (עבד) and Greek doulos (δοῦλος) to refer to slaves. Eved has a much wider meaning than the English term slave, and in many circumstances it is more accurately translated into English as servant or hired worker."
Christian views on slavery - Wikipedia

e,g, "God spoke face-to-face with Moses but Joshua will be instructed by Eleazar; Moses was the servant of God but Joshua is Moses’s minister (Joshua 1.1)." https://uwaterloo.ca/grebel/sites/ca.grebel/files/uploads/files/CGR-22-1-W2004-1_1.pdf

"If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free, without paying anything."
Exodus 21:2

So….if the Bible is your excuse for the imposition of slavery….the argument fails at the briefest perusal of the text.

4. But….how about simply defining black slaves as 'foreign'?

"While foreign slaves could be made slaves for life,…"

The treatment of blacks in the South doesn't seem to have conformed to this:

"….the laws regarding the general treatment of slaves applied to them as well (Lev 24:22, Num 15:15-16). The law made it clear that foreigners were not inferiors who could be mistreated (Ex 23:9); instead they were to be loved just as fellow Israelites were (Lev 19:33-34). " Slavery in the OT

If the Bible is used as the excuse used for slavery, then all of the restrictions need be followed.
They weren't.
It isn't.

5. "Most of the Africans who were enslaved were captured in battles or were kidnapped, …"
The capture and sale of enslaved Africans - International Slavery Museum, Liverpool museums

But....no slavery such as the transatlantic slave industry could exist under the restrictions described by the Bible......
" "Kidnappers must be put to death, whether they are caught in possession of their victims or have already sold them as slaves."
Exodus 21:16

6. The Supreme Court Dred Scott decision- due to collaboration by a Democrat Judge and a Democrat President- deemed slaves as personal possessions, and escaped slaves had to be returned to their 'rightful owners.'

Is this consistent with the Bible's authorizations?

Not in any way, shape or form.

" If a slave has taken refuge with you, do not hand them over to their master. 16 Let them live among you wherever they like and in whatever town they choose. Do not oppress them."
Deuteronomy 23:15

7. The aspects that identify what we call 'slavery' today include control of the life and death of the slave: the slave could be beaten to death with no crime having been committed by the slaves "owner."

That's not what is found in the Bible.

"… the Bible does record instances of slavery, but not in the cruel way in which we think of today. In today’s age, the idea of slavery conjures up images of a black man with whip marks on his back and bleeding blisters on his hands, working tirelessly day and night to please his ruthless white “master.” This is not the idea of slavery according to the scriptures.

When a man strikes his slave, male or female, with a rod and the slave dies under his hand, he shall be avenged. But if the slave survives a day or two, he is not to be avenged, for the slave is his money.-Exodus 21:20-21

If the slave died, the master would be put to death, but not if the slave survived (or, at least for a few days). Why? First, if the slave survived, it shows the master’s intent was not to kill or seriously harm the slave. Maybe they just got into a physical argument. Or maybe the master had to defend himself. Either way, it was a simple case of domestic violence, not pre-meditated murder. There is a big difference between those two.

8. This serves as a warning:

And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.-Ephesians 6:9

· The penalty for beating a slave was death if the slave died. If the slave survived, then there was no penalty, simply because the financial debts basically cancelled each other out." Bible Says It’s Okay to Beat Your Slave, As Long As They Don’t Die? Exodus 21:20-21?

Perhaps you being ignorant is related to you being a communist.

Thank your lucky stars that I am here.

You should step off, lying low-life.

You don't have a job, do you? Yet, you are on here yammering about work ethic.

All Israelites are servants of God. God took the people out of the House of Bondage in Egypt to be free, not to be slaves. Just as the earth is the Lord’s and is not ours to possess, so all Israelites belong to God and may not be possessed by other human beings, not by other Israelites …

Being a housewife and mother is work.. hard work.
Hard work and the price was right with a lot of benefits for the family. Now many women work in many jobs they do not like while their kids are taken care by someone else. Life does not have to be so complicated. But we made it so.
