The place of work,’ of ‘endeavor,’ in society.

1.But first……One of the most important ‘defining characteristics’ of communism/socialism/Democrat doctrine is their failed understanding of human nature. Is it the aim of most human beings to sit around and be given every need by the state?

On the Right, we have:
“Earned success is the secret to meaningful happiness. The government can improve your net worth with a check, but it cannot improve your self-worth.”
Jonah Goldberg

While on the Left: ‘freedom’ from work.

“When questioned about the comment of Teamsters’ President James P. Hoffa on how ACA is “destroy[ing] the foundation of the 40-hour work week,” she [Pelosi] smiled and declared that it was “a liberation” for the American people:

“Overwhelmingly, for the American people, this is a liberation, this is life, healthy life, liberty, the freedom to pursue your happiness, which could be follow your passion for good rather than follow your palate and be constrained by your policy. It’s about wellness. It’s about prevention, it’s about a healthier America.” http://www.thesongofbrokenglass.com/blog/2013/09/28/on-working-less-and-the-pursuit-of-happiness/

2. So, according to the Democrats/Left, all of America on the dole is perfect!

But experience and reality paint a very different picture: From Peter Ferrara, “America’s Ticking Bankruptcy Bomb,” chapter five.

‘Welfare’ as a wholly owned subsidiary of the government, and its main result is the incentivizing of a disrespect for oneself, and for the entity that provides the welfare. As more folks in a poor neighborhood languish with little or no work, entire local culture begins to change: daily work is no longer the expected social norm. Extended periods of hanging around the neighborhood, neither working nor going to school becoming more and more socially acceptable.

Since productive activity not making any economic sense because of the work disincentives of the welfare plantation, other kinds of activities proliferate: drug and alcohol abuse, crime, recreational sex, illegitimacy, and family breakup are the new social norms, as does the culture of violence."

3. Coming to terms with the two very different views of the value of work allows the thinking individual to choose to vote for the Right or the Left. Is a job merely the avenue to put food on the table…..starvation has never, including in the depth of Roosevelt’s Depression, been a problem….

Or is there some more intrinsic value to work, something that individuals find that gives them a feeling of self-worth?

My answer?

“‘Welfare’ as a wholly owned subsidiary of the government, and its main result is the incentivizing of a disrespect for oneself, and for the entity that provides the welfare.”

Welfare needs to have a 2-year time limit, like Clinton proposed. Time to find another job. It should not be a way of life. There used to be a term "Welfare Queens". Some states have 5-year limits. That needs to be cut, especially when jobs are plentiful. Maybe during a recession there can be an extension, but there is no excuse for welfare now.

I don't want to get into the discussion about "life's work" and "self-worth", or "beating the system", work is making your way in the world, being self-sufficient, not being a "charity case" or a worthless no-talent lazy "porch sitting" bum.

Welfare needs to be removed from government auspices.

Prior to Franklin Roosevelt, welfare was handled by charities and churches, carefully considering who got the relief, and the reasons for same.

Under FDR, welfare and charity became a patronage endeavor, to get votes rather than to ease suffering.

The Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC) doled out relief nationally to those states with the best political connections. The Emergency Relief and Construction Act of 1932 began with the best of intentions...but under the Democrats it went to well-connected friends, including mayors and governors.

Illinois, a swing state, got $55,443,721, which was almost 20% of the RFC's $300 million, more than NY, California, and Texas combined.

Murray Rothbard, "America's Great Depression," p.262-263.

Did you notice that the current Democrats plan to give guaranteed benefits to any who "don't care to work"?

Man is an incentive, reward based species that works best when creativity is left totally alone

We work best in groups of like minded people with no SELF agendas

Are you retired?

It is our poorer people who work the hardest, take the biggest physical risks, fight our wars, create our wealth

If they are lucky, they will earn enough to support a family and someday retire.

Republicans are making that incredibly difficult

Severe Depressions usually work themselves out within 3 yrs

My God this conceited quarter of a man was a cruel father and even crueler husband

But if I married that horrifically ugly dyke homosexual pos wife, I'd get my crippled dick licked by other lips too

I won't agree with your "harsh" descriptions above, but you are correct that he changed a normal downturn into the Great Depression.
I believe it was on purpose, to create a crisis that would obviate our Constitution.

a. While "The Depression" is probably the only economic downturn ever studied in government schools, few ever speak of any depressions or recessions prior to the "Great Depression."
Know how many there were?
Over thirty. And the average length was a year or so.

b. "The Great Depression (1929-39) was the deepest and longest-lasting economic downturn in the history of the Western industrialized world. In the United States, ..."The Great Depression - Facts & Summary - HISTORY.com

Know why? 'Cause Roosevelt wanted it to be.

OK....so maybe Franklin Roosevelt was actually trying to end the depression.....never mind that he made it last longer, by a multiple of five, from most previous depressions/recessions.....

It sure was a good excuse for overturning the Constitution.

Clarification. About 15% of the population need the assistance from us. I have done a lot of financial work for the working poor over the years and was a MASH unit for financial rescue. Along the way saw personal and family horrors and hardships that would make every woman here burst in tears, especially the kids involved

The problem with our Freddy Freeloader welfare system is these 15% get the scraps left over from the people benefiting for sitting on their asses drinking beer and smoking reefer making bastards all day long
