All nations import what they aren’t capable of making or growing. This really isn’t a complex issue.
If I may I'd like to add that the tariffs we had 4 years ago (imho) we skillfully crafted to not cause inflation but be borne by the sellers. This was done by tariffing only those goods where we had readily available alternatives. In a situation like that the tariffed vendor is force to eat the tariff or loose the sale.
Contrast that to tariffing all imported bananas, coffee, and chocolate --those vendors would just up their prices. We didn't. I'm glad.
