Interesting that you brought up 1976, when Ford fumbled by saying Poland was not behind the Iron Curtain (or something). Reagan the actor turned into a more or less civil performance of an actor playing a part, but he somehow got ahold of Carters' debate prep materials. And Iran magically held onto the hostages until just after the election, when they were somehow released and we somehow released military aid to Iran. But that's another story, and Reagan turned out to be not crazy and actually the better president.

I'm not sure how old you are, but I was around for the Iran Hostage Crisis.

The Iranians didn't "magically" hold on to the hostages. Jimmy Carter was desperately trying to get them back, and the Iranians, who had been totally screwed over by a year of sanctions and international isolation, and they halfway suspected Carter was behind Iraq's invasion of them. (The US largely did turn a blind eye to Saddam's aggression.) So holding the hostages was a big "Fuck You" to Jimmy Carter.

Jimmy Carter was on his way to losing the nomination to Ted Kennedy before the Hostage Crisis hit, and he totally took advantage of it with his "Rose Garden Strategy". The problem was, he milked it too long without trying to resolve it in any meaningful way.

There was no conspiracy, just Carter's incompetence.

I don’t think Biden provided any substance to his platform. He talked about energy, climate change, and taxes on the rich but appeared to be disjointed in that somehow all of these initiatives were all going to lead to jobs. He provided no insight as to “how” or “why” those jobs were going to happen. It’s almost as if “jobs” was a mantra to make everyone feel good and to justify each of his initiatives.

I defy any Biden supporter to refute my thread on Biden without a “But Trump....” or bashing Trump. We already have plenty of threads playing up Biden dependent on Trump being bashed. Let’s see if Biden is a solid stand-alone.

Trump called him out on his response to COVID and most didnt know that democrats and Biden sat on thier damn hands for 4 months calling Trump names while doing very little... That facts is now out in the open as seen in traffic about the COVID time line that exploded last night. The news is out and it will take a few days before the real outcome of this shit storm last night is known...

I found it very interesting when Biden was asked, "Have you ever called these Democrat mayors and governors and talked to them about these riots, told them to get it under control?" His response: "I'm not the President, so it's not my job." Really, dude? You're the Presidential candidate from their party. You certainly have the pull to get them to answer the phone and talk to you. But you don't feel any more responsibility to the country and to the people who live in those cities than to say, "I don't get paid to care, so I'm not going to until I'm paid for it"?

There hasn't been "substance" in a Presidential Debate since 1976... not sure why you expect there to be some now.

I would love if these guys came out with graphs and charts and numbers to support their positions... But Americans kind of suck at math and that would get boring.

So these debates will be reduced down to a few Zingers, and right now the leading Zinger is Trump telling the Proud Boys to Stand By, which is scary as hell.

In theory the current "debate" format allows voters to view candidates demeanor and, unless someone like Trump turns it into a shit show by failing to abide by agreements to allow the other person to speak, the candidates ability to recite positions supported by some claims of facts.

The OP is a false narrative, but I do think we saw the real demeanor of both candidates.

There was a direct link to Reagan being elected and Iran releasing the hostages. But it wasn't collusion as you infer, it was fear on Iran's part of what Reagan would do. The democrats and Soviets had spent millions of dollars and months of time trying to portray Reagan as some kind of out of control cowboy who would blow up the world if he were elected. The Iranians believed the anti-Regan hype and released the hostages just minutes after Reagan took the oath of office. They believed that Reagan was no Carter who would dither and not take effective action against a country that had committed an act of war against the United States.
