With so Many Residents on Food Stamps, why are there food deserts in New York City?

A food desert is a made up concept to pretend supermarkets are usually less than 1 mile away from any given point in NYC.

Maybe 2 miles. and there are buses that can take you there and back.
A food desert is where the consumers prefer Doritos, soda and Hot Pockets to broccoli, chicken and whole wheat bread

Yep. The left is unable to face the fact that the people they are trying to help don't always want the help being provided.

THis study was from back in 2018

SNAP households spend about 10 percent of food dollars on sugary drinks, which is about three times more than the amount they spend on milk. In New York City alone, as we've reported, this translates into more than $75 million in sugary drink purchases each year that are subsidized by U.S. taxpayers.

I worked in several so called "bad neighborhoods", and there were always food stores around.
I would think so.

Everyone has to eat, no matter how poor they are. Or if they decline to, they won't be around much longer.

Yes, I think this is it.

It makes for dramatic footage to walk through a "conah stoh" where there is no milk, but plenty of junk food, and the only meat is canned. Make it the evil shopkeepers' fault for not stocking healthy food.

But they stock the products their customers will buy. Rolling papers, 40's, ingredients for Purple Drank, and foods that are nearly pure sugar or salt.

The solution - strongly opposed by every Democrat and "not Democrat" on this board - is to restrict what can be bought with SNAP in the same way that what can be bought with WIC is restricted.

Absolutely. The government should not be supplying the food that is killing them

It has a definition and can be supported. You can quibble with whether it is an issue or not but the facts are as follows:

Food deserts are declared if they meet low-income and low-access thresholds:
  • Low-income: a poverty rate of 20 percent or greater, or a median family income at or below 80 percent of the statewide or metropolitan area median family income;
  • Low-access: at least 500 persons and/or at least 33 percent of the population lives more than 1 mile from a supermarket or large grocery store (10 miles, in the case of rural census tracts).
Fake stats. Marxists use that ruse all the time. Low IQ morons believe that shit.

If Walmart wanted to open a "Neighborhood Market" (like a regular Walmart with with less general merchandice, like toys and clothes), in the worst food desert in New York City, would it be welcomed by the city, and provided incentives?

It'd be welcomed by the shop lifters and reparations seekers.

Yes, they would.

Democrats and "not Democrats" hate to talk about the behavior among "members of the community" that drives healthy food providers away.

They who claim to protect the downtrodden should be the angriest when thugs among the poor do that.

At least that is the claim of the future mayor who wants to open government run food stores.

Mamdani proposes a network of city-owned grocery stores that do not pay rent or property taxes, which will allow them to keep food prices low. They are designed “to lower prices, not price gouging,” Mamdani explains in a video

Twenty percent of New York city residents receive snap benefits almost thirty percent in the Bronx receive them.

Millions of tax dollars are spent providing these snap benefits, and then more millions are spent on government programs.
To revitalize so called "food deserts."

Why would there be areas in which junk food, but no healthy food is available, when the whole idea of the snap program is to allow the poor to buy healthy food?

Two obvious answers readily occur to me. But I would like to hear input from others before I give my take on that.
But but but Bidenomics

You should seek help. I’ve seen your debate skills here. Your IQ is in the low 90’s. Which is why my effective retort caused you to seek shelter in name calling.

At this point many stores in NYC don't even bother to report most thefts.

Have you seen the vaults they use in pharmacies to protect things like razors and hair products?
Ridiculous. When you can’t debate the facts… call them all lies, without proof, then throw in an anecdote. NYC has a lower crime rate than Oklahoma City by 50%. NYC is one of the safest big cities in the US.

It would be robbed out of existence in a week. Not only would the store be robbed but the employees would robbed. Customers, of course would be robbed. If they are shopping they must have money.
Moronic. There was a Kmart in 770 Broadway Manhattan for decades before they went out of business during the pandemic. They had one of those low rent agreements that allowed them to make money and they definitely upcharged the prices in that place. Shopped in there all the time.

You’ve never been to NYC.

Not sure. Small towns in the NE hate Walmart and make it a ***** to open there. They would rather have high prices and local businesses than low prices and no local businesses. As for an inner city metro area maybe it’s less of an issue, like I said, not sure.

And the new guy wants to end all that. Adams at least tries, the commie is gonna ***** slap the NYPD.

Who is going to be happy to provide rent-free space for these stores?

They are designed “to lower prices, not price gouging,”

Will shoplifting be illegal in these stores?
Seriously dude? These people are hungry and need to feed their families. I bet you're one of those white honky rich Republicans who hate people of color and want them all in prison or out of your gated white community. California has been very successful with its law that anything under $950.00 is just a misdemeanor. So what if a few needy people leave with a whole cart full of stuff? The mayor plans to tax the greedy rich people so people can eat.

Signed,

A brain damaged liberal

Thank you for your honest answer.

The fact is that Walmart has tried for decades to open stores in New York City, but has been stopped by a combination of union objections, mom and pop fears of being put out of business, and a tangled mass of zoning regulations.

If the NYC politicians allowed a Walmart to be built, they would lose union and small business votes, so hungry people who want healthy food are denied.

Not to mention the lost job opportunities for unskilled, but willing, workers.

The truth is that sanctuary cities that are filled with illegals and poor people make loads of money off them. The welfare money, the money that illegals make from working menial jobs at restaurants, and construction is put back into the sanctuary city economy. That keeps labor costs low and provides thousands of government jobs in addition to more representatives in Congress.

Biden used illegals to artificially keep inflation lower than it would have been and to keep the unemployment numbers lower.

Chicago fought against Walmart for a long time.
The first one opened in 2006.
We ended up with 8.
The dems all whined. Because Walmart was racist!
Four of them never made money.
They lasted 10-11 years.
Walmart closed them. Because Walmart was racist!
