Indictment Sought Against Rep. Jefferson
CBS News: Sources Say Corruption Charges To Be Brought Against Democratic Congressman
WASHINGTON, June 4, 2007

(CBS) Sources tell CBS News that authorities are seeking an indictment against Congressman William Jefferson, D-La., on more than a dozen counts involving public corruption.

Jefferson has been the subject of a ongoing probe in which FBI agents allegedly found more than $90,000 in cash in his freezer in August 2005.

CBS News correspondent Bob Orr reports that the Justice Department is expected to unveil the charges later today.

This was the latest development in the 16-month international investigation of Jefferson, who allegedly accepted $100,000 from a telecommunications businessman, $90,000 of which was later recovered from a freezer in the congressman's Louisiana home.

Last year prosecutors and the FBI seized nearly 19,000 pages of documents and electronic files from his office.

That's the way I feel about all politicians. If there was a feasible way to kick all we've got now out and start over, I'd vote for it. They all seem more interested in keeping their jobs and getting paid than doing what's right for those of us who gave them their jobs.

They were calling for both to resign BEFORE any charges were filed.

Jefferson indicted; New Orleans recovery suffers more bad news

NEW ORLEANS -- The corruption indictment Monday against U.S. Rep. William Jefferson dealt another setback to a city struggling to recover from the economic and political devastation of Hurricane Katrina.


The investigation surrounding Jefferson had crippled his position as a champion for the city long before the 16-count indictment was handed down in Virginia.

In late 2006, he handily defeated a field of challengers. His re-election hammered the image of a state that already had a poor reputation for political integrity and was still coping with memories of the chaos that followed Katrina. Analysts said his re-election hurt national sympathies for New Orleans.

Louisiana congressman William Jefferson received more than $500,000 in bribes and sought millions more in nearly a dozen separate schemes to enrich himself by using his office to broker business deals in Africa, according to a federal indictment Monday.

The charges came almost two years after investigators raided Jefferson's home in Washington and found $90,000 in cash stuffed in his freezer.

The indictment lists 16 counts, including racketeering, soliciting bribes, wire fraud, money laundering, obstruction of justice and conspiracy. He faces a possible maximum sentence of 235 years.

He is the first U.S. official to face charges under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which prohibits corporate bribery ovdrseas.

Jefferson, through his lawyer, claimed innocence. He will be arraigned Friday in U.S. District Court in Alexandria.


Not only did the AP leave out the embarrassing fact that a group that is touted as the most ethical Congress ever just had a Democrat indicted for bribing foreign governmental officials, the AP also failed to mention that even as recently as February 17 of this year, long after the investigation was made public, Pelosi appointed Jefferson to the security-sensitive House Homeland Security Committee, where members have access to vital national secrets and make policy for national defense.
