I don't think "fair trial" is really the issue. Generally fair trial means the BoR and basically no torture and the defendant gets to know before hand what is the evidence against him and gets to question the accusers and present his own witnesses.

McConnell proposes "a trial" with not witnesses, and no evidence presented. The prosecutors are whomever Pelosi would appoint from the House and the Judge would be Roberts. She's not sending over the evidence and prosecutors unless there's actually a trial .. with witnesses and evidence.
