You're speaking with a credentialed security expert. I got paid big money to ensure Fortune 500 audits had good data. Audit means end to end traceability, with no broken links. What we have in politics is NOT an audit.

ALL banks require multi factor authentication. You put your card in the machine which means you have physical possession of it, then you type in the PIN which proves you know it. The cell phone apps go a step further, they send you a text that matches your phone number with the number on the account.
You missed the point.... In a forensic election audit, they audit the entire voting process to see if there are any inconsistencies and/or election law violations.
Not looking at who cast the vote, rather was it cast correctly.

BTW, they can trace mail in ballots at the request level to see if the person requesting it has a legitimate reason to get one.

I'll repeat, verifying procedure with bad data is pointless.
Go ask the IRS. When they audit you, they look at the data. They'll make you prove procedure, but that's not what they really care about. They care about the dollars, which is the data.
Look, there are mysterious machines on the back end of the election process. In Arizona, they verify signatures by machine. How are you going to audit that? A signature is a rotten way to verify a ballot. What if you could just sign for every ATM withdrawal?
In California you can show up at any polling place without ID and just tell the clerk your name and the city where you live. If your name is John Smith the clerk will show you a page with 1400 John Smiths and say "which one are you?" All you have to do is point to one and say "that's me" and the clerk will hand you a ballot. Procedure has been followed, according to the law - but the data is highly questionable and untraceable.
The election process is fundamentally broken in ALL FIFTY STATES. There is not a single ballot that can be traced in any state in the US. We can do better. Without even spending any money. We could have a bulletproof nationwide election system for the price of a postcard. There's nothing hard about any of this stuff, other countries do it and we can too. All it requires is the political will. Which is the part that's missing.
