Well, you would not be hung for minding your own business probably true. I can agree with that. However people are routinely executed for protest or pulled off the streets for violating Islamic tenants. Exection there is also used as a tool of intimidation and not just a punishment for violent crime. It is used to punish non violent "crimes". There is something seriously wrong with that.
They are NOT routinely executed for protesting. But usually imprisoned. (according to the laws - which they are well aware off).
The last protest was extremely violent - with thousands of paid agitators, burning and looting their way through the streets. If this kind of situation erupts - "they" all know what can happen to them (according to the law) - incl. peaceful protestors.
These Iranians are not stupid and have been living with that system now for over 46 years - aka 2 generations. If the same situation happens (did happen several times) in e.g. Bahrain - the Saudis will send in their military - arrest everyone they can get a hold off and protesters also face the death penalty (just that none in the West or the USA seems to be bothered about it). The protests or uprising in Bahrain resulted into almost 3000 injured and 80-110 killed - many of those during detention. And there was no large scale looting and burning or massively attacking police stations - as in Iran.
Now keep in mind that out of around 1,5 million living there only around 600.000 are Bahrainians. Iran has around 94 million people so take that 3000 injured and around 90 killed times 160 - and you would get devastating numbers. But none cares.
As for Islamic tradition - "they" also know the laws - and a Hijab for women is compulsory - I have been to many Muslim countries where a Hijab is NOT compulsory, yet around 80-97% of them wear it voluntarily, since its a part of their culture and not just religion. So if an Iranian woman objects to it - she must find a way to express her protest not publicly, and certainly not via refusing to wear one in public and additionally seek attention via Western Medias - that kind of woman to me is simply stupid or a women's lib nut.
That Iran is extreme on religious issue just like Saudi-Arabia or Kuwait is true, and Iran being ruled directly via a theocracy doesn't make it easier- and "decadent" Western influence is not liked or even tolerated. - aside from the UAE or e.g. Malaysia and Indonesia.
On the other hand, if Iran wouldn't be sanctioned and embargoed to death since 47 years - even their theocratic government would be far more like Saudi Arabia or Kuwait. A rich or well-doing society is far more difficult to control aka to keep down - then a vast and poor population such as in Iran.
