There are good and easy lessons to be learned from the people who already do this. For example - in the hospital example I mentioned, they already know how to keep the medical records separate from the dollars. (HIPAA is a federal law with severe penalties if they don't). So, it is entirely possible to keep the voter record separate from the vote itself. No one has to know how you voted. They just have to know "that" you voted. The rest falls under the umbrella of "certification", which is the same as LaCert or Intuit certifying for the IRS. Both political parties AND the general public need to have confidence in the process. The same as insurance companies and the IRS need to have confidence in medical billing.

In medical billing, they can turn around a mistake inside of 30 minutes. Because there is instantaneous end to end traceability. So why do we have to go through a month long audit for a vote, that we know in advance isn't going to mean anything anyway? In medical billing people can dispute, either the hospital bill or the insurance payment or both, but audits only happen when there's a consistent pattern (meaning a high likelihood of a ripoff). The point being, that individuals (you and me) should be able to trace our own votes.

Are you familiar with blockchain? That's a great technology, it could be used for this purpose. Very secure, and only the endpoints can see the whole picture.

Long time ago, Jimmy Carter made a claim that paper ballots were the easiest way to commit fraud. Not to long ago, in his advanced age, he was convinced they were ok.

France stopped mail in ballots.
