I was drafted into the Army and did my 8 weeks of basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington, just south of Seattle, near Tacoma, during the months of April and May.
The weather was very mild, sunny with blue sky. Guess I was there at the perfect time of the year.
Didn't get to go anywhere because we were restricted to the base, and had special white tags sewed onto our shirts. Seems we were close to the Canadian border and they didn't want any basic trainees fleeing to Canada in order to avoid being sent to Vietnam.
I remember there was a large snow capped mountain off in the distance. Some guys thought it was Mt. Rainier while others said it was Mt. Hood. Always wondered which mountain it was and how far away? ...
