Opposition to Trump is not merely limited to the GOP Establishment. IT is the entire Professional Political Class and the corporate crony network it is built on.
The Oligarchs became fearful of the American people doing a Germany 1932 on them, so they introduced a ramped up hyper-consumerism to dominate American life and it has been largely successful in getting Americans to not pay attention to their own interests since at least 1950. Edward Bernays was the chief guru of using public figures to endorse products, not as the best at function, but as best to make one feel good about the purchase. Quite a number of Presidents paid him homage and kissed his ring, he was that influential.
From his Wikipedia article:
Bernays's vision was of a utopian society in which individuals' dangerous libidinal energies, the psychic and emotional energy associated with instinctual biological drives that Bernays viewed as inherently dangerous given his observation of societies like the Germans under Hitler, could be harnessed and channeled by a corporate elite for economic benefit. Through the use of mass production, big business could fulfill the constant cravings of the inherently irrational and desire-driven masses, simultaneously securing the niche of a mass production economy (even in peacetime), as well as sating the dangerous animal urges that threatened to tear society apart if left unquelled.
Bernays's magisterial, philosophical touch is in evidence in "Manipulating Public Opinion" (1928) when he writes: "This is an age of mass production. In the mass production of materials a broad technique has been developed and applied to their distribution. In this age, too, there must be a technique for the mass distribution of ideas." Yet he recognized the potential danger in so grand a scheme and in "This Business of Propaganda" (1928), as elsewhere, sounded the great caveat to his vision: a public relations counsel "must never accept a retainer or assume a position which puts his duty to the groups he represents above his duty to society".
Our current Political Class is merely one facet of a much larger Oligarchal power structure that has been designed to distract, and preoccupy the American mind so that it will not lead to these feared bestial urges. From sports to fashion to music groups to artificial controversies intended to divide the working class against itself, we are hoodwinked with increasing skill in each generation.
But the problem has arisen that the corporate elites now do not have their Duty to Society of any kind any more. In fact, they use their positions of leadership, notoriety and trust to exploit the masses with even less regard for the peoples interest. The elites are our abusing Catholic priests, and our Politicians are the Bishops with political power and leadership that deflect attention away from the corporate abuses so that we calm down and return to our sports channel. And nothing ever gets changed, ever.
Since 1950, when personal taxes were at a 3:2 ration to corporate taxes, we have seen the tax burden shift to the personal tax sources till now it is 4:1. We have watched our liberties and rights erode, such as the growth of Asset Forfeiture and its use. We have our jobs being exported and we see the importation of foreign workers that undercut the existing pay scales by 25%. We have a black market labor pool that further undercuts construction and other primarily labor jobs. The average individual after tax income adjusted for inflation has dropped since 1973.
Why? Because the Political Class does its job exceedingly well; to get the public to calm down and resume trust in the Corporate Crony Network and its rackets it runs for corporate interests.
Trump threatens all that. The Political Class knows he means business because he has a hero complex. He wants to be a hero and save this country from the professional political class that has been exploiting, misleading and stealing from the American people.
And that is why Trump supporters just do not care what lies the media tells about him; they expect the lies to be told and have already discounted them.
