I can find no reference to NATO troop actually in Ukraine.

NATO's "expansion" as you call it, is fueled by the fear of Russia's neighbors that Russia will invade and conquer them. Putin has made no bones about his aims of recreating the Russian Empire at any cost. That's why long-time neutrals like Finland and Sweden have joined NATO as well as most of the Eastern European nations that suffered under Russian governance after WWII until the fall of the Iron Curtain. Countries like Poland know what it is to be ruled by the Russian Bear and are arming for bear themselves and joining NATO for group protection.
