Ever hear of the French Resistance? As for collaborators, it's a common action for many when faced with dangers or disruptions in their lives. They look around, see they have no personal power to stop the wrongdoing so, rather than risk anything they just go along. Eventually, they lose everything, anyway, but they can't look that far ahead.

Wasn't the "vast majority". Vichy dominated just less then 1/2 of France and had their army DISBANDED by the Germans in 1942 way before the end of the war.

What makes you think this cultish regime had the loyalties of the people of France?

They killed a lot of people to save themselves from having their lives disrupted by the Germans. Nobody really admires them -- especially not the French.
