Why no affordable housing?

Until he bought those properties his wife had her own business cleaning private homes. That's how they were able to buy, renovate, and flip properties (long before the term existed). It was his experience as a builder that helped get him the loan for those properties.

But what was the source of the money that attracted highspanic renters?

True. When I got out of college, the best I could afford was some dumpy rental where I was afraid to come home after dark. Most of my friends shared two-bedroom apartments, or rented a room in a group house. None of us complained.

Nowadays, the kids feel they’re suffering if they’re not in a $2500 luxury apartment walking distance to the metro with a 24-hour doorman.

I shared rent (in two-bedroom apartments) up until I got married at age 32. Many of my roommates were friends from high school and other single guys that I worked with. It was great, with very few problems.

Governments, the taxman, and financial institutions need people living from paycheque to paycheque paying tax and bank fees.

The days of one household wage that paid for a house, housewife, kids, car and holidays are long gone. Both now work full time for a house that has gone up over tenfold and a maximum of one or two kids. Everything is now tax and credit interest.
