When a sprinter runs the last 100 meters of a 400-meter race, his breath turns on and he barely runs the last hundred. It's logical to assume that the maximum sprint distance should be 300. Why did they make 400?

1/4 mile was convenient? ... not as a race length but rather a track length ... does this fit a football pitch? ... it certainly fits a gridiron field, and no one important cares about soccer ...

100 and 200 are considered sprints
400 and 800 are middle distance
1500 and up is considered distance

We usually think that sprint distances are 30, 60, 100, 200 and 400. Are you sure? Are there official standards?
