And their property taxes go up.

The dirty little secret is that many houses don't increase in value, the lot they sit on does, however. They should just tax the increase in the value of the lot. My aunt had a house on a very desirable street. From the outside it looked 'ok', but the inside was a disaster. Many houses are like that and wouldn't 'appraise' anywhere near 'fair market value' because of this.
