Why is banking the world's 2nd oldest profession?

Whoever said that was making some sort of a point, but it wasn't an accurate historical point.

Given that the word "profession" means in this context, "occupation" there is no doubt a whole laundry list of occupations preceded recorded history. Given that primitive economies were barter-based rather than money-based there can be no doubt that farmers, hunters, soldiers, and various craftsmen supported themselves through their trade long before there was money to pay for it, hence, it was long before the first banker raised his serpentine head.
