Colonialism certainly had negative effects in terms of resource extraction and remnants of that persist, however....Why is Africa and the Middle East so poor?
Why did they not develop industries and factories?
I hear that Colonialism may be big factor had under Colonialism is the direct occupation and control of a region to extract resources and undermine its stability and growth.
Both regions have extremely long histories of this practice fracturing, breaking, and dismantling any mobility and upward growth. And have long history of Colonialism.
Colonialism had the effect of advancing a lot of cultures in the same way that Roman conquest did for Europe. Like it or not, a lot of civilization and technological advancement is based on conquest and colonialism.
For some strange reason, Westerners often think that European colonialism is somehow uniquely evil. It really isn't. It was simply one of the most widespread and successful forms of conquest. A logical assessment of history's various conquests would tend to paint a much dimmer view of the Mongols, since they really didn't offer much to their conquered in terms of advancement.
If Europe had never conquered parts of Africa, much of that continent would have advanced much slower than it has so far. Similar things could be said for the Roman conquests, European colonialism in the Americas, and even the Muslim conquests in parts of Africa and Asia.
The root of why Africa has advanced slower than a lot of the rest of the world would seem to be a combination of genetics, culture, and natural environment. As Charles Murray explained a few decades ago, IQs do tend to be lower in much of sub-Saharan Africa. This is probably related to nutrition as well, since intelligence and brain development are highly affected by nutrient uptake (particularly protein) and caloric consumption. If a child suffers from hunger in the formative years, it can have lifelong consequences for IQ.
Culture plays a part in mate selection. A culture that emphasizes education and intelligence in a mate will produce more intelligent offspring in general. A culture that prioritizes other things won't produce as much of that.
Finally, Africans in many areas face a lot of biological threats that aren't as common in other parts of the world. There are an exceptionally high amount of parasites and vermin in certain parts of Africa that can stifle societal development. While the climate of Africa has historically been more hospitable for humans for a longer period of time, when the Last Glacial Period ended, Europe gradually became a relatively temperate area to live in. The last several millennia of Europe provided a climate that was relatively hospitable to humans and had fewer biological threats than Africa.
