Seriously I avoid talking politics and other potentially contentious issues with most friends and family in real life because there are so many way to enjoy folks without introducing a potentially toxic element into it. Here at USMB, very few know who I am in real life and those know me well enough to not take offense at my opinions or at least give me benefit of the doubt.I'm making a poll.
Just curious.
Here I can test my opinions and beliefs with pretty much anonymity and learn whether an opinion I hold can be supported with evidence, logic, reason. If I find I can't do that, then I know the opinion is not worth having. Many times I have started responding to someone here or on social media and halfway through my argument can see how many holes there are in it and I quietly delete it.
It's good mental exercise and keeps me more intellectually honest.
I have little expectation of changing anybody's mind but every now and then I am rewarded by somebody appreciating my argument or learning from something I post. I also learn from what other's post.
And I have become hardened over the years because the trolls don't bother me. Sometimes they provide ammo so I can teach something or I can harmlessly vent, but I can mostly ignore them. I'm pretty darn sure they can't support their arguments with evidence, logic, reason or at least they never do. But then they are ideologically motivated rather than by any basis in fact.
