Why do we pay actors so much?

We pay them that much so that we don't get stuck with them waiting on our tables or serving us coffee at Starbucks.

They make really lousy waiters and baristas.

Why as Americans do we feel actors deserve so much money? I honestly have more respect for the police, firefighters, the military, lawyers, congressmen, senators, etc.

I get very disqusted with the movie theatre, everytime I go I cant stop to think why I believe a portion of the money I paid for this movie ticket should go to the people I hate the most in life, the rich. I should stop and so should many Americans in protest going to movie theatres, without fans together we can really screw over hollywood. A way to get our revenge on all those rich actors for being so rich. If your a socialist like I am your a hypocrite by going to the movies and financially supporting the rich vermin scum.

Yet we as Americans seem to support financially those we hate most in life, the rich. We support them by going to see movies. I have never met a movie actor in my life and I could care less about their autograph, to me they represent everything I hate; greed, wealth, individualism, capitalism.

If it were up to me I would tax the living shit out of them to the point they would have to settle for a 250,000 house and a Ford. If ever socialism takes over in America a great way to get even with the rich would be to tax the living crap out of them, taking 90% of hollywood actors incomes and redistributing it to the populus.

To be honest, I can't remember the last movie I seen. It was probably early 2000's or something. When it comes to television, I DVR everything and barely see the commercials using fast forward.

Economist Walter E Williams was often asked by his college students what the secret to financial success was? He replied "It's simple, please your fellow man."

If you make a great hamburger, you please only yourself. If you cook for parties, you please your fellow many by the dozens or hundreds. If you open up your own restaurant, you please your fellow man by the tens of thousands per year. If you franchise your restaurant, you please your fellow man by tens of millions per year.

If you are a musician and write good songs, you can please your fellow man by the hundreds playing parties and bars. If you go on the road, you please your fellow man by tens of thousands a year. If you get a recording contract and start playing concerts, you please your fellow man by tens of millions per year.

Money always follows how many of your fellow man you please according to Dr. Williams.

Movies make money. Those involved in making it should get a share of the profits.

So if I get paid to do a job and the company / endeavor does extremely well I should get a share of the profits, not just get paid a salary?!

Interesting....is McDonalds sharing the profits or just paying a minimum wage to the 'fry guy'?

If actors negotiate for a share of the profits of a movie, not just a salary, and if Hollywood agrees, and if the movie does extremely well, good for them. They are the exception, not the rule.

Here is how services in the capitalist world works: You can provide a great service to a few or a small service to many (and every gradation in between). Doctors provide a great service but it is on an individual so their pay, though high, is limited by that individual's ability to pay. They can't pay you 10 million for a life-saving operation if they don't have it. On the other side are people who provide a tiny service, entertainment for example, to many people. No one would pay $10,000,000 to see a movie, even if they could, but 10,000,000 people would gladly spend $1 for a few hours of entertainment. The world is very unfair when teachers get paid so little while a guy throwing a baseball gets paid so much but that is the reality.

Finally, a leftist that's starting to get it.
Sure do

Sharing wealth with those who create it

Then why does that only apply to entertainment and nothing else?
Comes down to leverage
Most workers don’t have it

Most people don't have acting or athletic abilities either. So what's the difference?

The situation about outrageous salaries of actors is much the same as that other entertainment field, that of sports. Here is an explanation from years ago that might educate as well as entertain...

Anybody can get up on stage or screen and act.

Just like anybody can hit a baseball 400 feet or play the guitar in a new and exciting way.

Right?

Movies make hundreds of millions of dollars, sports franchises are worth billions

The idea that those who attract the dollars get some is not that hard to accept

Why is this in politics?

I guess to make a point. Why do leftists complain about what companies or CEO's make, but not people in the entertainment world? If a person spends years in college, even more years climbing up the ladder, and finally lands themselves a 5 million dollar a year CEO job, they are demonized by the left. However if somebody throws a great football around and makes even more than that CEO, the left has no problem with that. They bring in the money, so they should get a good share of it.

Modern life and city living remove people from nature, unless they experience the beauty of the earth digitally. Urbanites, to fill the void, may turn their channel to nature shows or fund international wildlife opportunities to save a specie by closing an area to development to preserve space for a specie that requires isolation and a balanced ecosystem to preserve their food source(s).

Actors are generally people born with very appealing features that are maintained by disciplined dieting, cutting edge skin science, and gracious appearances at all times. As a consequence, their personality may adopt an air of arrogance or a frequent bar fight to prove they are human, not angels. Regardless, they require maintaining a distance from other people, especially if they are so intrinsically appealing they have a spate of interlopers pressing them for time, which amplifies aberrant escape from their self-imposed exile, and they even get mad at each other over not receiving the attention that the most recent worshipee receives from hoi polloi. It takes money to hire good body guards to protect them around the clock, so they need 3 shifts a day and as many body guards as it takes to keep their home havens private. Also, they get more favors if they make major jewelry purchases, wear certain types of expensive and attractive shoes, clothes, hair pieces, and drive the best automotive machines that others cannot afford. All these things make them more and more attractive, and to keep them up, they must require an income that provides them with protection and yet more glamor. This takes time, effort, and the ability to handle tiffs in a diplomatic way, and also the ability to compete with other famous people for the best bodyguards and domestic helpers who are discreet and firm about non-disclosure of personal details of the celebrity they serve. One sorry mistake can get the world's magnifying glass looking at their every move, because pretty people are worshipped so long as the mirror does not get cracked.

Jealousy and bad help can destroy their career, so if their work sells well on an open market, they can demand higher wages to buy all the discreet services and needs their stardom requires to keep them out of a negative public eye that tolerates no flaws in the people they worship on account of their beauty and charisma on film.

They're dummies if they don't maintain a semblance of aura about their public face, so their sponsoring movie producers pay them what they have to to get them to star in their show, which in some cases makes or breaks a production studio.

My guess therefore is economics requires them to make more money than they pay out to their helpers, and the only guarantee of a paycheck is attention to their beauty or masculinity and time to learn their lines in peace and quiet. IOW, they have no life in presenting the character of a person whose life they are portraying on film, and the best of the best of them gets it right every time. Their spare time is scarce, which adds to their increased chance of being a target by the jealous person who feels left behind in their life. There's no getting out of it. They're either curt with hangers-on or they lose the time it requires to learn lines and delve into the makeup of the person they are portraying in their actor roles. That seems to give them bad press, which some people hold to them the personality flaw that they perceive.

Because Derek Jeter could do a better job at running GE than the CEO of GE could do at playing shortstop for the Yankees.

From the OP -I get very disqusted with the movie theatre, everytime I go I cant stop to think why I believe a portion of the money I paid for this movie ticket should go to the people I hate the most in life, the rich

Why do you hate the rich?

Both sport stars and entertainment people get rich by collecting a little bit of money each from millions of people.

For instance, later today I am going to go see the latest Star Wars movie. Eight dollars for a ticket. Some of that ticket price is going towards making Hollywood rich.

I get a little bit of entertainment and they get a little bit of my money.

That is a different mode of getting rich than say a Crooked Hillary getting millions from foreign countries by selling government influence.

Correct, and in the process, you are giving your money to the top....freely. But unlike the left, you are not a hypocrite who gives your money to the top, and then complain that they now have it.

Sure he can, and you would know, because that's what you see in the movies, isn't it?
