Not all liberals are in favor of welfare and not all liberals are in favor of raising the minimum wage. I guess I'm a moderate. Raising the minimum wage just makes it more expensive to be poor.
In some cases assistance of some sort may be necessary. This becomes a complex issue because it often is on a family level.
Welfare should not be a life style. Welfare should not be open ended. The benefits of Welfare should never exceed the income of people in low wage jobs, not collecting assistance.
An assistance program should include a mix of the parts and should be for a pre-set term:Education, Job Training and Work.
If education is the problem school half the day and work the other half. We should have a crash course in reading and writing so that training in a multitude of languages is not required. In the past we had programs that included a requirement to learn "reading and writing" and people spent years learning to read and write. A time limit has to be imposed and a 50/50 mix of book-lernen and work is set. When you are in an environment where it becomes necessary to learn a different language you can learn it in short order.
Work, the most obvious would be day care. The second would be Food Service. The third would be Health care. Some people learn faster than others just as some people are more responsible than others.
I hope that we have learned a lesson for the conditions of today. Not everyone should have a college degree.
I hope this provides an understanding of how to reduce the roll Government plays; but it will take more than that. It is not the job of government to provide jobs. Business likes to cry about Taxes; but has it pretty much the way they want it. They have almost unlimited loop-holes in our tax system.
That brings up something I have always believed in. A minimum tax. I don't care what it is even $50 or $100 a year would be good.
We need manufacturing, sending our jobs overseas did not lower the price of the items, it would be interesting to see if bringing them back would have the same effect. It wasn't that long ago when we had a division for labor; direct labor and indirect labor. Indirect labor (overhead) is now the big one.
We need to use limits on holding political office (s) just as we have for president. All bills should be single subject. Bills are handled in order, delaying a Bill should require a 2/3 vote. A limit on staff and trips. Vacations do not start until your desk is clear.
Start reducing duplication of duties between agencies, How many agencies do we need? Can all Native American Agencies become one?
Make Civil Service workers responsible. How many have been terminated for not doing their jobs?
If something isn't broke don't fix it.
If something is broke fix it. You don't have to destroy something in order to fix it. I does take work to fix it though..
