As a fallen away Catholic who has spent some time studying the Bible, I am curious as to why so many Christians embrace the Old Testament even as they seem to reject the teachings about love and equality found in the New Testament.

Maybe mostly, because of this idea that the Bible, which includes the Tanakh, and the letters known as the NT, as complete and the infallible, God given word. Most westernized denomination, including the RCC, have forced everyone to believe that the OT and the NT must harmonize, even if the representation of God in the O.T. is not the representation of the a crucified God in the NT.

Go to any church in the U.S. today that is RCC or protestant and claim that the OT is not needed, they would deem you a heretic, tar and feather you and if legal, some might have burned you at the stake medieval style.

The reality is this, and I have pointed this out before in this forum. There is NO edict from God, Jesus, or even within the Bible itself that Christians need to have or will be given a 'Bible' or the need to create a canon of letters that include the O.T. and call it the Word of God.

The question that should be asked is this "What did the first century Christians ever do without a Bible", keeping in mind they were the closest to Jesus and his teachings and the gospel (Don't conflate gospel for the Bible as gospel means 'good news').

What I have noticed in recent rereading of parts of the OT, in particularly Deuteronomy, apparently written long before Christ was even born, is that the text refers to "The Lord" with no particular name. I'm beginning to think that The Lord is actually the Lord Moloch, for he teaches murder and pillage. I don't see how Christians can reconcile that with the message of the New Testament.

He's calling your OP a bait thread, and a sucky one at that, genius.
I thought here in the Green Zone we were supposed to discuss not personalities, but matters of substance. No name calling, just mature rational public dialogue. He, and I guess you too, don't want to talk about why so many Christians today reject the teachings and messages of the New Testament. Are y'all the sort of "Christians" I was describing? If so, thanks for making my point even if you cannot defend your position, or will not defend it.

Don't confuse the Old Testament (testimony/history of the prophets, patriarchs, and other writers) with the old covenant. Same with the New Testament, the history of the early church and of the new covenant.

Ninety-nine percent (more or less) of the Bible is history and prophecy. Only a small percentage reveals the covenants.

You offer semantics Woodz, and we both know it. You know what I'm talking about.

How can one claiming to be a follower of Christ, a Christian, support and follow the hatred, theft and murder advanced by the Old Testament, Torah and Talmud? I say it's logically impossible, but then organized religion is not know for its logic, it's known for its faith, and faith is the opposite of reason and logic.

Christians think the Israelites were good people while they were not. Even Israelites thought the Israelites were wicked.

Like the rest of the human race, some are and some are not. Well put, and a universal description.

No Christian that I know supports those things. That's just the way things were back then. I do support the death penalty however.

Most were wicked. God put them out of His sight in disgust by way mostly of Assyria, leaving only Judah. And then, a few centuries later, he annihilated Judah by way of Rome.

The extinction of the Israelites, in the minds of the Israelites, was the work of God.

Every Christian I know, about 3 family members and twice that many lifelong friends fully and enthusiastically support the genocide by Israel. Many other people would prefer not to talk about it, but those willing to talk about it, church goers, truly believe the Jews (Israelites) are God's Chosen People and superior to themselves. They openly admit (those willing to talk about it) the believe that because the Bible tells them so, the Old Testament.

If the Israelites (of the northern kingdom) went extinct, who did Jesus preach to?

"I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." -J. Christ.

If they are Christians, they are God's chosen and likely descendants of the Israelites. That's who Jesus preached the gospel of the kingdom to and sent his disciples to. He didn't preach that to the Jews and didn't send the disciples to the Jews.
