Why are SNAP benefits so high?

Twelve hundred a month from whom?
SNAP
Some states pay more than $1200 for a family of five.

The irony is that the more you spend on food the less healthy you're likely to be. Considering this it seems that our government is promoting poor health.

But the Jew girl doesn't live in any of those high food cost states..

No you wouldn't. You'd go through your SNAP benefit in likely a few days then having nothing to eat the other 20-25 days of the month.

And if someone showed up at my register wanting to pay for their Wagyu steaks, porterhouses, filet mignons, and fresh north Atlantic lobsters with a SNAP card, I'd refuse the purchase and report him.

That is a far more offensive use of SNAP than buying a bottle of cola.

If someone is looking to eat steak and lobster on a SNAP card, chances are good they really don't need a SNAP card.
Steak and lobster are approved foods for SNAP recipients.

But, people are like predatory animals, they 'wolf' their food down with hardly a chew causing all sorts of unpleasant health problems.

I see. So, is this part of the new Woodnutz "Slow Chew" plan for spreading out all those generous SNAP dollars? Eat slowly, chew well, drink lots of water so your belly feels full after eating your requisite packet of Quaker Oats and state cheese?

Oh wait, maybe I need to ask first--- do the poor and helpless even get cheese?

I mean, that comes awfully close to "desert."

I know someone with four children under 8 (no fathers in the picture), and two are under 3, and she gets $1200 a month tax-free. Considering how little young children eat, $400 a month covers everything.

I wouldn't know about that, but if she has little kids, she must be on welfare too. So basically, she is feeding five people on $1200 a month (I assume you meant that was all just SNAP money).

Seems to me that the state ought to be taking legal action to recover the cost of all this from the actual father of those children who is actually responsible to feed these kids and should not have to be the taxpayer.

I suppose this is a good place to point out that while no one would take food from a small child (except maybe Woodnutz), many people on SNAP are also innocent, only on it due to some misfortune or mishap of life after working hard all their lives. So what the state really needs to do is get the abusers off the system rather than cut back the amount of simple cola, coffee, tea, or pie a legitimate person can be allowed to buy.

I actually ran some numbers for a friend about 20 years ago and I came to the conclusion (then) that for a large adult male, to meet the state's own recommendations for calories and content to eat a healthy diet with enough calories to be well cost about $300 a month then, so I bet that figure today is more like $600.

So that is
  • $600 for the mother.
  • $150 a month for each child.
That sounds pretty adequate to me but no overly generous.

If I received the maximum SNAP benefit in my state, which is $292/month, I would have $200 to buy steak or lobster as my present food budget is about $90/month.
Re: as my present food budget is about $90/month.

The average monthly food budget varies significantly based on household size, dietary choices, and location, but a general range for a single person in the US is $297 to $558

For a family of five, the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) (formerly food stamps) benefit amount depends on several factors, primarily the household's income and expenses. Generally, the maximum monthly allotment for a family of five is $1,158, but the actual benefit amount is calculated by subtracting 30% of the household's net monthly income from this maximum

Which I find interesting. The question can be fairly raised that these very highest of quality proteins should not be affordable to a SNAP recipient. If they can afford to spend it on steak, maybe they are getting too much money?

I'm actually pretty OK with the state saying that only cheaper cuts of meat like hamburger, shoulder round, and other types of common meat be qualified for SNAP. And perhaps only X amount a month on lobster. These are luxury foods. A person on SNAP needs less to be eating filet mignon, porterhouse, chateaubriand, lobster and truffles than they do eating twinkies, corn dogs and Coke.

No one needs Wagyu steak to eat well and to enjoy a well-balanced and diverse diet. Well, everyone except maybe HereWeGoAgain. :SMILEW~130:

The annual cost of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps, is approximately $112.8 billion. In fiscal year 2023, SNAP served an average of 42.1 million participants per month. The program accounts for roughly 68 percent of the USDA's nutrition assistance spending,

Doing the math, this comes to complete program cost of $223 per person, per month.

That is right in the ball park.

Do you mean "dessert"?

Proper chewing doesn't require added water as it promotes enough needed saliva, adding 50 percent or more to what yer chewing. The average person swallows when saliva production is just beginning, thus thwarting proper digestion and satiety. Why do you think people have the digestion/elimination problems that they have?

And as I said, a family of 5 gets $1200 (or almost). Tax-free.

OK….but for a family consisting of 1 single mother and 4 little kids, they get $1200 a month tax-free if Mama doesn’t work.

I was saving the other 's' for some poor, starving SNAP person. :smoke:

So you want SNAP people to dehydrate themselves first on a lack of fluids, then to use up all of their own spit to wash those paltry bits of food down trying to fool their stomachs into thinking they got a meal? :omg:

You have obviously given this whole matter of proper mastication an awful lot of thought. My hat bows to you. :uhh:

That's only if they have ZERO net income. And represents the MAXIMUM, and not the usual amount people receive.

For a family of five, the maximum monthly SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefit is $1,158. This is the maximum amount they could receive

And I was talking about the woman I know with four kids - and four baby daddies - who has no income beyond government goodies.
