Trump had a "Stay in Mexico" policy. Why remove this policy which had reduced illegal immigration to a trickle?

I believe there is a large swath of Americans who are basically just putting their hands up in the air and giving up. You can have a "lukewarm" war like Korea, Vietnam or the War on Terror", but you can never have a world war again, because everyone has nukes. So we lost in Vietnam. Life went on.
