What percentage of tv shows have gay characters? Far more than 5%.

So if a TV show has 100 characters and one of them is gay, it gets included then? What percentage of TV shows have a murderer in them? Probably more than the percentage of murderers in the country, but you don't hear people complaining about murderers getting in their faces on TV.

Why? Why are there gay characters on just about every tv show when they're only 5% of the population at best?

Because they're about 85% of Hollywood.

The entertainment industry is profit motivated. Hollywood would just love to make gay oriented movies and tv shows. They can't and stay in business. There have been two gay themed tv shows, The New Normal and another one about a gay father. Neither lasted more than a few episodes before failure. Many tv shows have a gay character that never develops past a single line of dialogue.

Because women are the target audience of romance movies such movies will continue to be heterosexual. The gay audience is too small to generate income. The gay oriented movies The Normal Heart and Behind the Candelabra were both made for cable. They never made it to theaters. With direct to cable it didn't matter whether it made a profit or not.

As ideological as Hollywood is they still aren't stupid.
