Prior to Emmet Till, Northern whites looked at Civil Rights as a southern issue. They looked at things like riding in the back of a bus and not being served at lunch counters as a minor inconvenience

The torture and killing of a 14 year old boy drove home how vicious Jim Crow could be. As did the subsequent trial that quickly acquitted those who did it.
