As an aside, everyone should take a first aid course if they never have, or if it has been a while. Basic things like tourniquets, wound compression, CPR, helping choking victims, etc is good to learn or get a refresher.

Not saying immediately rendering first aid would have saved this woman’s life, but just in general, it is good to know or get refreshed on these things.

I get that his alleged mental illness was not exactly breaking news. But those matters are better suited to professionals in the field of mental health. Courts — for the most part — aren’t truly equipped to deal with it.

There ought to be a way to institutionalize anyone who is suspected of such dangerous mental illness provided that they get properly assessed as being mentally ill, maybe via a hearing, before any lengthy period of institutionalization.

I’m not sure there is a whole lot they could have done. First aid for a stabbing victim when you happen not to have a well stocked EMT ambulance is kinda difficult.
