The mushy middle is where the corruption is. If you veer left you get one kind of immorality, if you veer right you get another. Since the two are incompatible, you end up oscillating. Which leads to where we are today, which is what we want to get away from.

My solution? I identify as libertarian. (With.a small l). I mind my own business, work hard, and take care of my family. I try not to stick my nose where it doesn't belong. I focus on personal learning and growth, and try not to do it at other peoples' expense. I pay my own way, because I figure nothing is worth getting if you can't get it yourself. All this is a stable morality, I don't have to veer left or right because the morality has a broad base and encompasses both extremes. In politics I focus on the practical, which is why I lean right most of the time (because leftards are idealists and don't have a practical bone in their bodies). Priorities may come and go, and should be addressed in order of importance and urgency. Right now the economy is important and the dumbing down of America is urgent, so I speak out on education and encourage learning. (But not frivolous experimentation, because it's expensive). Pretty soon priorities will shift because we'll be at war with a powerful enemy. Purple hair and morning weed will go out of style (excesses are usually self correcting). Through all that I hope to maintain a stable morality. We'll see whether that remains possible.

There is no official "center". The closest thing is the large group of Americans who don't obediently fall in line with the agendas of either party, but still have opinions on each individual issue. So it's all over the place on the issues.

Who do you vote for? It's getting tougher and tougher. I donate to the Forward Party, not because they're going to be big winners, but because they're the only party that actively proposes communication, collaboration and innovation.

Your options are lousy. This is not a good time for those who aren't interested in being in a tribe.

Trump and his team are about as central as it gets. The trolls will no doubt be rating this post as fake news and do everything they can to derail it, but what Trump and his team are doing is restoring the principles of good government and stewardship that the Founders intended. There is pretty much nothing excessively extreme/radical in the MAGA vision and agenda.
