These trials were done en masse in such way that was riskier to volunteers. If there had been severe adverse reactions, then it would have impacted a larger group. Where most clinical trials are spread out over a longer time period to involve smaller groups first, then larger and large groups over time.....to mitigate just such risk.

The COVID vaccine went through the same layers of review as any other vaccine. Just faster.

And to be clear, Salk began his widespread clinical trials with over half a million children. Children were his clinical test group.

Before the 1954 pediatric trials, the vaccine had only been tested on 'scores' of people. Including Salk and his own family.
